3.91 Dealer Install

Has anyone yet gotten the dealer to warranty a 3.91 install and update the computer for the change in ratios?

I'm going to the dealer to install mine next week. What questions you got?

Thanks..just wondering if they are now updating the computer for the ratio change. Earlier posts indicated that GM was delayed in getting an updated program. Initial discussion with my dealer indicated they had never done one yet and were not sure.

No update yet on the gear changes. Labor depends on the dealership. I know I get a discount there. I'm being charged 300 flat for labor.

Dealers don't have the capability of doing this. They can't even fix the speedo for different tire sizes much less new gears.

A mont ago I asked on of the local dealers here how much for the parts, install and computer flash for 3.91's. After talking to him, I'm under the impression that they have the software for the gear change.

And he quoted me $1,363 for everything including tax. Only $300 for labor sounds like a great deal.

and for the tune.. its a big N.O. talked to GM and they said they are looking at releasing the tune at the end of this year.. and they told me its not 100% sure either.. and this is me and the dealership on the phone with GM rep.
since my car is tuned.. im going to just take a HP tuner and tune it.

Are they putting in the 1LE pumpkin or is this just for the ring and pinion and labor? If its not the 1LE complete gears and pumpkin it sounds to me like you might want to take a gallon of astro-glide up there when you go to have them installed. Just my .02

Yup, quote was for the 1LE gearset....and I agree, they're either on crack or think I'm an idiot. My jaw just about hit the floor when he told me that!

From what I've read on the board, I'm thinking more in the neighborhood of $800-$1000 total.

The software to update your current SS to the 1LE 3.91's is available currently. As long as GM has a gear ratio available for that platform and the tech knows the proper procedure to call into techline he can get the software patch to correct for that gear ratio. The downside is most techs don't know how to access it, GM charges the dealership for the patch, its either $50. or $150. and its time consuming for the tech(time on the phone with GM). A software patch is also available for those upgrading to the ZL1 conversion with 3.73's, if any dealer tells you its not available yet they don't know what they are doing.
We just finished one today for a client that does not want to tune their Camaro, so all they have done is bolt ons that don't require a tune. We just picked it up from a local dealer that reflashed the corrected gear software. It took them longer to do it than it took us to do the gear swap.

question.. if i have GM do it will i have to retune my car since the flash will erase my old tune?

For what its worth, I thought I would share mainly for the SoCal folks, I got a quote of $1,675 for a TruTrac Posi upgrade and 3.91 gear installed in my car from Unitrax of Anaheim.
