Z28 Cold Air Intake

Hey guys, I have a 2012 2SS with the LS3, and I am considering buying the Chevrolet Performance Z28 cold air intake 23454578. My question is will it work properly on an otherwise stock vehicle without any calibration or tuning? GM points out "No calibration support from GM is available" making me wonder
if it is required. Also, why does it come with a new MAF sensor? Thanks for any info.

The maf is in a different location and I believe different diameter.

If your going to spend the money on the intake, get a tune. While it may not be necessary, your only going to see a real benefit if you get a tune. Make sense?

I would do headers and the CAI and then get it tuned.

I ran a Cold Air Inductions intake for a while with no tune and it was fine. Its one of the best out there.

Read this and open up the spreadsheet, he tells you if they need a tune or not, i dont think the z28 one is on there though.

Your good to go without the tune. Honestly if you plan on doing other mods I would wait to pay for the tune. Yeah you get the most out of tuning but if your doing more you can wait and save money. You'll notice the difference either way .

Cheers,

Buying a tuner pays for itself through DynoSteve. Free tunes for life with every upgrade. FWIW.

Thanks for the responses everybody. I'm new to this and was not sure how the engine would respond to the increase in air flow, sounds like it at least won't run worse from a bad fuel/air mix. Does the ECU "adjust" to the higher air flow and take advantage of it? Maybe there is another thread that explains this. Happy New Year all!

The answer is yes, the engine will adjust within a certain range. I would put the air intake on and not worry about it.

After the intake then get headers and a tune, that will wake it up more.

Pretty much sound advice here. I ran (and still do) the Z/28 CAI for a couple of years untuned with ZERO issues. The sound alone is worth the price. Practically sounds like an aggressive exhaust it's so loud. I'm tuned now still with no issues. It comes with a strong MAF.

The fit is just plain, 'factory.'

Some will ask, how did you get it into Cali? Simple, I had it shipped to Reno and drove it in!

I was told In another thread it's not needed because the z28 didnt have insulation. The insulation on this hood supposedly makes full contact all around.

It looks like you can shave it flat somehow and the it would fit. I may try it anyways if i get bored.
