Hey folks, next year I plan on going to Rose Hulman (the #1 undergraduate engineering school in the country) and am truly very excited to major in Mechanical Engineering. So please do comment if you're an engineer, what kind, and tell me what you guys think of your current jobs!
Thanks Joe

2 years of ME undergrad and 3 years of Biological and Agricultural engineering(BAE) undergrad at NC State University. Final degree in BAE. Currently working as a Civil Engineer designing bridges. I loved engineering school. You won't regret it as long as you stick with it. Too many of my friends went into engineering school when I did and switched out after their second year. Now a lot of them regret it. Stick with it and learn as much as you can. Take internships whenever you get the chance, even if they are unpaid. It will pay off.

I started my undergrad at a CC, and we used to make fun of the kids who switched from engineering to something else. It was ALWAYS the same major. Follow the above advice about internships. If you get stuck in a position at the end of your undergrad where you don't have a job, or prospects, go back to grad school. Better yet, do it anyway. A Master's is basically a BS at this point. A few directors in my department refuse to read resumes with anything less than a PhD on it. |

BS in mechanical engineering 2003 and MS in engineering 2010 Purdue University
Currently a manufacturing engineer at an aerospace company for the last 9 yrs. Let me suggest getting an internship during the summer to gain experience. Ryan

Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from The University of Texas at San Antonio - December 2007.
I've been working at my current job since May of 2008 designing high-voltage power lines across Texas and in some parts of Oklahoma and Iowa. I'm planning on taking the Professional Engineering Exam in April of next year, assuming they approve my application. I enjoy the work. It can sometimes be a little hectic, but other times it's a little slow, so it balances out. But it's certainly not so stressful that I'd ever lose any sleep. My work hours are 7-5 Monday through Thursday, but then just 7-11 on Friday, so it's nice having a half day every Friday to just relax or get done whatever I need to at home. As far as advice goes, there are TONS of sub-fields in the catch-all "engineering." Try as many of them as you can to see what you enjoy the most first before you really commit to any specific focus. Mechanical Engineering, especially, has a very broad spectrum of applications in the real world to choose from, so it can be a bit overwhelming to try and decide what path you want to follow. Good luck, and I'm sure there are more than enough of us here to answer any questions you might have!
