Z/28 Convertible?

Current generation Z/28 factory built convertable:

1. Can it happen?

2. Should it happen?

3. Will it happen?

Bottom line, Z/28 is a purpose track car. A convertible naturally decreases chassis strength due to lack of roof. Plus, convertibles weigh more compared to coupes. Weight savings is one of the priorities on the Z/28.

The Z/28 is a track car and that isn't very compatible with a convertible. I don't see GM making a convertible Z/28.

  1. In theory, just about anything is possible.
  2. No, as the Z/28 is a dedicated track car which demands the maximum structural rigidity at the minimum amount of weight.
  3. See #2

GM will build one just like they did the COPO as an advertisement/charity auction car....willing to bet a beer on it. You better bring half a million to buy it if and when it happens. See Barrett-Jackson 2015.

I'd say a half a million wouldn't touch it....if they do... Which I doubt....

There is both merit AND precedent for this: Elliot "Pete" Estes' custom-created '68, built as a "thank you" gift from late-'68/early-'69 parts and prototyped pieces. And building a "one-of-one" Gen-5 Z/28 ragtop would surely be a fitting finale, GUARANTEED to make it THE most expensive Brand New Pony Car ever sold...

God knows, there are enough folks out there salivating over the RPO version to assure a $pectacular re$ult...one that even Ron Pratte might raise his hand for, and he's as diehard a FORD guy as there is for "Specials", one-offs, and charity cars.

Frankly, I like the idea...but only for ONE, and for public sale only...

Po$$ible Price? What's a 1-of-8 '69 Trans Am Convertible selling for, in perfect condition? THAT would be the starting price for this one...

Difference being the COPO had a full cage so it was not relying on the roof for rigidity.....

I will take that beer bet and up you a shot.....
