RX Catch Can + Breather = possible oil leak issues??
Hello Camaro5 fellas,
I am curious to know how many of you guys that have the RX Catch can + Breather installed in your car have had oil leak issues; here’s the explanation: It’s been 22 months to be exact since I installed the RX catch can + breather in my car; I am sure I connected these devices correctly. Now, last week I noticed a couple of oil drops (2-3 drops nothing mayor) in my garage floor and proceeded to clean the underneath areas of the car and put some cardboard on the floor to continue monitor the leak for another week; the result was I did not notice oil drops 2 days out of the 7; I am not sure if the outside temperature affected in some way ( those days were a little colder) So, I decided to take the car to the dealer and so they added trace ink to the fluids and after they did that I drove the car for another 3 days, took it back to them and turns out the leak is coming from the cover plate located right above the oil pan and he also replaced the rear main gasket. The service technician pointed out there was a crankcase building pressure issue related to the use of the catch can (some component not properly doing its function) As mentioned earlier, since I decided to add the breather as well, was sure to follow the RevXtreme instructions and caped the nipple on the front inner side of the passenger valve cover to the air bridge on the CAI tube elbow as well The only way the dealer was able to honor the warranty and fix the gasket was if the OEM hard plastic lines were reinstalled (removing the catch can) The idea of using a catch can definitely makes sense and I can testify it really traps contaminants but what does not make any sense at all is the fact there’s no way to tell when some of the catch can and breather components are not properly function and creating some other issues like in my case I would really appreciate your thoughts and opinions Thanks, Albertog |

the catch can is good. try the gm oil seperator for the 1le instead of the breather cap. i had same issue after driving hard at 2 days of road course...blew or kinked and pushed out the bottem of my rear main seal.
catch can most definatly keep if you installed it properly i have the 1le seperator on order hopefully here today or tomorrow before my road course track days this weekend. you can run a seperate catch can for that side as well...its not much more than the gm 1le clean side seperator. edited to say not neccesarily same brand as you but that rx catch can is legit and wasnt the cause, most likely the breather with the old intake nubs capped off not allowing the crank case pressure to relieve itself. the breather cap only flows one way so you dont get a vacuum leak and was working as intended but with how some of us drive or use our cars we still need a way to bleed off excess pressure

Intersting. No oil leaks here. Had the breather on but took it off a few months ago. Think i didnt cap something off. I only have oil stains from the driverside by the washer fluid but that is inside the hood noton the floor. Think it might be the break fluid cause that is also dirty like crap. Im sure someone can chime in with better info.

Not the cause of the leaks, but this is such a common problem with all the v6 & v8 GM motors.
The 1LE clean side trap is excellent and highly reccomend for those running their car hard. Running w/out the can is not advised with all the issues it prevents. Unless the dealer is already one of our dealer network (there are GM dealers across the country that sell and install the RX cans). The crankcase pressure issue is usually from the far to small of PCV fixed orfice. The entire engine is expected to breathe through this: V6: ![]() V8: ![]() These also clog over time making it even worse. |

Hello everyone, thanks for your opinions and suggestions
I really want to keep using the RX Catch Can because I have seen what it traps (nasty stuff) however I am afraid the same problem can come back and not being covered anymore Hi Tracy, do you think in my particular case; the breather could be the issue?....If so, would you recommend to still use the catch can only; eliminating the breather out of the system? Like I mentioned before, I installed the catch can + breather 22 months ago; Are there any other additional installation procedures or updates that I may not be aware of? I did not know some GM dealers are now selling and installing your C.Can; can you please let us know what GM dealers particularly in Houston TX?...I would like to stop by and speak with them; Thanks Albertog |

Only a small amount of the oil enters from the clean side so your covering most with the can. Quote:
The LS3 has the same sized orfice in the valley cover and is as restrictive. I like to cap it and pull from the rear of the drivers side valve cover because if you evac from the vally cover (like the LS3) the entire drivers side valvetrain bank remains stagnant. The entire crankcase should be evacuated. You can also T the valley to the drivers side valve cover for good results as the vally has to be removed to get at the fixed orfice and drill it. |

...Not a big fan of pulling off the valve cover and drilling...lol...but would just teeing off the valley cover to the valve cover be ok,or better, without drilling?....Thanks again... |

With all the problems people are having with the RX brand catch can why don't they take it off and replace.
Seems the ELITE is much better product. I know It has been stated that rx catches the most but it seems to cause most problems too. This was the determining factor for my purchase of the ELITE after reading people problem with this product. After reading up on catch cans the importance of having one installed is important. I have put around 300 miles since the instalation of my the elite catch can and already caught some oil looking substance. If I were you I would get rid of that RX and replace with one with less problems if its designed has malfunctioned so much likelyhood of failure again is good. |
