50k mile checkup

I am sure there are other threads out there..but please humor me and give me opinions and thoughts.

my 2011 lt2/rs a6 is coming due for her 50k mile check up. Dealership says tranny flush. I have never done a flush always a drop the pan and replace the filter and new fluid. Opinions?? Also Have a local shop that I really trust for the drop the pan and replace the filter and fluid. are there any other items that should be addressed.

was frankly surprised the dealer said only the tranny

thanks in advance.

the answers you seek are in the manual that came with your car.

yes, you have a choice to abide by the manufacturers maintenance recommendations as stated in the manual, or go with what the dealer recommends.

the typical dealer will have a sheet that lists all the various maintenance routines THEY recommend, which typically they pick based on a combination of manufacturer's recommendations AND what they would suggest based on their own opinions and recommendations from THEIR service dept.

Quite often the dealer will have you change ALL the fluids every 60k miles along with fuel cleaners, etc, etc.

HUGE difference in cost.

I am sorry I realize that my brain is faster than my fingers which makes my posts not the best. I do want your advise so please bear with me.

manual says 50k check up is for struts...tranny. ..fluids..And hinges. So I call local dealer and they say tranny only and recommend it being flushed which I have never had done.

so I called local shop that I trust and they can offer me a drop the pan change the filter and new fluid. The dealer offered a flush...which is 16x pressurized filtration of the transmission fluid. ...no new filter nor fluid as the filtration makes it like new.??? The

Please advise on the flush as I have never had that done...and also it seemed strange the dealer only listed the tranny for service. What do you other camaro owners do? the shop says the flush is good under 50k thousand miles. ..it's just new to me

Thanks

I'd get the scoop on what the flush actually includes from the dealer. Maybe ask a different dealer.

Dropping the pan and replacing the filter and re-filling with new fluid doesn't actually swap out all the fluid. There's still fluid pooled in the transmission, in the pump, in the lines, and cooler. This is what a flush does, it swaps out the fluid. A machine is hooked up to the transmission cooling lines. The old fluid is collected by the flushing machine while new fluid is being pumped in, all while the car is running. Ideally with a flush, the filter is replaced at the same time.

If GM is now filtering the fluid--that sounds weird. At 50k I'd think a filter and complete flush would be required. Ask the dealer again or check with a different dealer.

Personally, I would never get a tranny flush. I would use the shop you trust. I would also change differential fluid, brake fluid, air filter and cabin filter.

Thanks So Much For The responses. This car is my baby and first nice almost new car for me. Learning everyday and appreciate everyone's time and feed back. I just want to take the best possible care of this car

There's a split on the belief in flushing. Many say it causes the tranny to go but then that's if it's high miles. But if that's the best thing for my girl it will be done. I have 5k miles to decide and research more. Will definitely be adding the other fluids to the list.

One more question...I have heard that once you flush a transmission that continued flushes need to happen instead of a drop, drain, new filter and refill.

is that accurate?

So the cost of the 50k mile in southwestern Co is 500+..for tranny flush, different fluid, brake fluid and in cab filter. Is this reasonable?

That's pretty high, if you're up to the task you could do it yourself it's really easy to do the cabin filter, tranny, and rear differential. Only thing I wouldn't do on my own is the brakes.

It's reasonable if you consider you're paying shop rates for the work, i.e. anywhere from $70-$100-ish/hr for work and full rip on the fluids and disposable parts.

If you're not mechanically inclined, this is what people pay unless they have friends who can help and have the know-how to do the work for cheaper.

I'd read how to do the cabin filter yourself. If it's like any that I've done, it should be about a $20 part and 10 minutes of your time, most of them are behind the glove box or in that vicinity. A shop will charge you time to put it in.
