changing the coupler preventive

Hi folks,

Now the the coupler really gives me a headache. I can't participate on the extended warranty GM gives, and i don't have any rattling right now so i cant get it changed right now (except on my own expense). I have a 3 year warranty on my ZL1 from the dealer that imported it, and its running just fine after one year and about 8k miles.

Now here comes the problem. I ordered some pulleys together with some other parts (before the problem about the coupler was known) and of course i want to install it as soon as i get the parts (about 3 weeks from now). Now that will make me lose my warranty that i have from the dealer.

So i have 4 options.
1) wait with the bolt ons till the coupler starts to rattle
2) install everything and put even more stress on the already faulty coupler by design, and hope for the best.
3) hope the supercharger starts to rattle right now by pure chance, so i can get it changed. Not happening.
4) get the coupler changed myself

Now i talked about the idea already in one of the many threads about the coupler, and someone told me it can't be changed preventive. Is that true? Are the rotors or whatever already somewhat damaged?

If you can't find a dealer to replace the coupler than just install your parts and don't worry about it. If or when it makes noise the part is $50 and not too big a deal to replace. Just take your time and it will be fine. This is NOT the first supercharged gm motor with coupler issues... Not as big a deal as people are making it out to be.

It was my understanding that the coupler just makes noise and what really damages the SC is the bearing with inadequate lubricant. Maybe the breakdown of the coupler decreases the life of the bearing.

Spoke with my service manager today about this very same issue. I am doing pulley's, Cam and Headers. He said that they will still cover it if it is from the "Known" problem even if it is modded. This is a TSB not just warranty. GM extended the warranty to 120K on the SC because of this issue. That being said, I spoke with my mechanic that is going to do the work and he said that he was told to stay away from a blower pulley and only do the lower ones to get the same results so that if the SC does fail, you can show that the SC was not modded in any way.

When you do your mods just swap out the old coupler for the solid Lingenfelter one and you are good to go.

Exactly and if you read the letter that Gm sent out they will reimburse you for the replacement of the isolator. Mine wasn't doing it until recently and I have 22000 miles on my car. It is at the dealership that just checked it a month ago and said it was quiet as a mouse. My concern would be the wear on the shaft and the shavings that come from the wear. Rotating parts and shavings don't work to well. Especially when they spin at high rpms like 15000- 20000.

This thread deals with it.

The problem with doing only the isolator is that it doesn't resolve the issue of a dry bearing.

How is that issue resolved if the supercharger is replaced under warranty?

No metal shavings to contaminate the bearing grease.
