Bolt-ons without cam?
Given all the failures I read about that seem to be related to cam installs, I've been wondering what gains could be had leaving the stock cam in but doing the other work.
I'd say CAI, headers, cats, intake, CNC heads, TB, and a tune. Thoughts? How much do you leave on the table by not touching the cam? Thanks! |

All bolt ons -- 3.91 upgrade
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=364759 I'll be doing a cam -- but break-in is really important -- using Joe Gibbs for the break-in. -Don |

I have the LS3 tuned with Dynatech LT headers, VMax PTB, CAI Inductions, Inc intake, Apex scoop and washer relocator, and NPP dual mode exhaust. It put down 424rwph/411rwtq.
I wouldn't do CNC heads. I you will only gain a few horsepower at a very high cost. One option I have thought about is an LS9 cam. It's good for around 20hp and compatible with FI. I would be sitting around 440-450rwph with stock lifters, spring, and pushrod Another option is contacting GPI for their modified intake manifold and tune. I saw a thread a few months back where they were able to get ~435+rwph out of an LS3 with no internal work.

I was 375 rwhp before cam on a auto without head work.
But I ran a gt11 cam for a year with no problems. I just swapped engines to a LSA with a gt9. Still no problems. I'm now pokin my head into the low 700rwhp.

All depends on cam too though. Avg about 50hp left behind w/o cam. Little more with head work and manifold. I dont really consider it being left behind though. Intake exhaust allow the engine to function better as it come from the factory with capabilities of. Cam more so changes the specs of what GM gave you to begin with and you are operating outside of what you were given from the beginning (makes sense in my head at least)
