That makes the conversation far too simplistic. Since most amateur shooters are terrible, they don't kill as many as they could. So it isn't murder rates.. only.

I tend to agree. I think comparing some of the largest cities in America to some of the smallest cities is an unfair comparison. Note that San Diego is only a couple spots above Plano, and is a very, very blue city. (Just to be clear, I don't want to start a politics discussion, I only address that because the video specifically mentions it).

I seem to remember during one of his videos he pointed out very specifically that after you got past a certain population density (or population city size), the murder rate skyrockets, which really makes sense. However, being that both Detroit and San Diego are hovering around or above 1 million people, both are "blue", and both have very strict gun control regulations is interesting, because they are also both at polar opposite ends of the murder rate.

I would propose that murder rate has much more to do with the poverty and educations levels (which is huge factor in places like Detroit, Chicago, and Oakland) than anything else. People that don't make a good living are much more likely to resort to other-than-legal methods of getting by.

There are too many factors that play into it. There are actually gun murder per capita statistics, which I want to say actually makes up the vast majority of US murders at 3/100k (roughly?). When you take our firearm ownership and compare it to Brazil (Only cops and criminals there... no such thing as private ownership), they stomp us at something like 32/100k.

The one thing that we can be sure of in this country, at least so far, is that allowing more people to carry has no (or at least a non-measurable) effect on the murder rate. Carry laws have been changed to allow more people to carry than ever over the last decade or so, and despite the fear mongering there are no measurable negative problems with it. Even most recently, Chicago PD said they were shocked that the issuance of permits hasn't caused any problems since they implemented that policy over a year ago.

It is a complicated problem to be sure...
