Dexos and oil Q..
So from what I've learned, most synthetic arent full synthetic, just a Group III oil that is a 'blend' or whatever. True 'lab' synthetic are Group IV and V (V beeing another non classified oil but very good if I'm right).
So since forever, I mostly ran Pennzoil Platinum 5W30(group III??) bought at Walmart. Owned a modified LS1 and modified LS2. Now I have a LS3 and it ''needs'' that Dexos oil. I find it funny that GM state the LS3 needs a Dexos approved oil but the LS3 was introduced in 08 and the Dexos in 2009. ok.. I know oil isnt the same anymore since I dont remember when but oil like Pennzoil and Rotella werent as good as they used to be..ZDDP additive removed or greatly reduced, I think (2009). So the big question is; is it ok to run an oil like Castrol Syntec non Dexos approved (group III) 5w30 OR Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 or should I go with the Quaker State synthetic 5w30 Dexos approved(group III too). Car is under warranty. I dont wanna risk anything for 50$, but I like to do things for a reason. I wont run high end oil like Amsoil/Royal Purple racing/Mobil true synthec/Redline, etc. I will use em if I run a camshaft. I know the best way is to run oil analysis, and I will do that this summer and report. I know there is oil that exceed Dexos but havent seen any around here (some company dont wanna pay for the Dexos tag, thats ok). Feel free to give me any advice..I kinda have a headache now LOL. What the Dexos was create for? Is it go-green product label or what? ..good read http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/178

Dexos was created because of the cam and valve train needed better protection than a regular non synthetic oil provides. Unless you are running a turbo, exsessive turbo bearing heat needs a full synthetic oil. GM wanted to come up with a cheap oil for the masses that will be used in all their vehicles. Even the super charged ZL1 engine runs the dexos. It's only $4.00 a quart. I run it in everything. Save your money, don't buy fully synthetic oil unless it is turbo charged.
Your right about the licensing fees not paid by a lot of good oil manufactures. If your a Pennzoil man, run Pennzoil blended semi synthetic oil. |

I am a firm believer in fully synthetic oil, I work in the chemical industry and have seen the comparison studies. That having been said, I will run the Dexos oil as long as my Chevy dealer is doing the oil changes for free for 2 years.......when I start doing my own I will change over to Mobil 1 full synthetic.

Money talks...and has a large bearing on what auto manufactures "recommend." I have never run synthetic anything in my cars.....and guess what? None of my cars have imploded or exploded. I understand your warranty concerns and would continue to use the recommended fluids. But really, you can use whatever oil you want...the key is regular maintenance.

M1 is Dexos approved, $4.16/qt at Costco on sale and perfect for my once per year OCI so, that choice is a no-brainier for me. There is plenty of proof out there demonstrating the superiority of synthetics, including the highly refined G3 based ones. Use them and sleep well.

If you're under warranty, and something engine related needs to be done. (only under Under warranty) GM will test the oil.
If they don't find what ever they are looking for you are not be covered. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

2012+ come with Dexos (again oil cap reflects this) all can run either Mobil 1 or dexos2. As long as your have the dexos approval you are fine for warranty work. There are several out there. Now from what I have been told GM went with the dexos2 so they only had to stock 1 bulk oil which would work in all their vehicles (except diesels, they take dexos 1) |
