Injector change on a L99 (same as LS3 i imagine)
Had to upgrade the injectors in my car and found only the ZL1 sub forum having pics. Thought I would throw a few pics up here of it done on an L99 just so you are a little more familiar before doing. Simple swap for sure.
Anyhow - pics below. In my case I was swapping out the procharger provided 50# injectors for some ID850 injectors. Very straight forward swap. What I did was relieve the pressure from the rails by removing the test port cap on the end of the drivers rail. If you put a rag over the end of it and push with a small screw driver it bleeds down fairly quick. Next was to identify what holds the rails down, on this motor is was 4 bolt/studs that have a few other things attached. One in the back holds the mount for the engine cover, another has a bracket that also required the removal of one intake bolt (driver side) - Also on the drivers side in back there is this metal bracket that has two bolts, it has a lip that stops the rail from coming straight up. This bracket I was able just to loosen the bolts but not remove them. Gave enough slop to get past it. Most important was a quick trip to auto zone to get a fuel line removal tool. There is a semi hard line coming from the tank that requires an ac/fuel line removal tool to separate. I originally thought I would just do on the car, but glad I got the tool as it gave much better access to the injectors by taking the 1 piece hard rail out. Have lots of rags when you pull that fitting as its a good qty of fuel that comes out. Once I disconnected all the wiring from the injectors (which is just little pull up tabs then squeeze) there are a few wire looms that have push hold connectors to the rail. Those pull out with needle nose pliers at the base, simple once you have hands on. Once the rail is out of the car, i put on the table upside down (oh, go drain the rail somewhere) and started pulling the snap clips that hold the injectors in the rail. After the first one its simple. Once I had the injectors out, its a fairly straight forward procedure to replace them with your upgraded units. I did use a light oil on the o-rings that go in the rail. After each new injector is installed, snap the clip back in the spot and you are good. Lastly, before i took them back I put more oil on the o-rings that go into the intake, just a finger swipe around each to help them pop in. Everything goes back the opposite of removal. I didnt use torque settings but since the whole job was done simply with a short 1/4" drive, just snug plus a hair seemed right. The fuel line connector literally snaps back on and makes a reassuring click. After double checking everything be SURE to put your new tune in before starting. Putting the tune in doubles as a chance to check for fuel leaks which I imagine are highly unlikely. Our cars are certainly a simple platform for this upgrade. Thats about it and total time was maybe 45 minutes straight. I attached pics just to help visualize some of the things I mentioned. Have a great one and let me know if you have any questions - I am far from an expert, just a garage guy, but would love to help fellow members when needed. -Jason
