Is this common?
Hey everyone, I have a 2014 Summit White ZL1 that's been my DD since I bought it 16 months ago. Went through the tires in 19000 miles. Did a lot of research, visited a lot of places and found a guy at the local Good Guys who had been putting tires on for 18 years and also said he did a lot of high end cars so and said he would be ultra careful changing mine. However, I got home and found this on the right front. There is a smaller, but similar nick on the left front. I'm not going psycho about it and I'm not going to call the place and demand anything, I just want to know if it's been your experience that your rims get damaged, even a little bit? I don't know what to do next time. I won't be going back, but he explained in detail how he would tape the entire rim to protect it and it would be flawless. Is there anything special you tell your guys when they change tires to protect the rims? Is this just part of the deal of owning this car? I keep my cars as flawless as I possibly can. The damage is actually not that big, but now that I know its there it sticks out like a sore thumb.

That's unacceptable. These wheels nick easy yes but for him to do it after claiming it would end in a flawless install id say something.

It has happened to me before.Take it back, he wanted your cash and that's it. I always do a walk around with the service writer or mechanic following me before I leave! The same reasoning I use when picking up my car from a any shop.

I did do a walk around after and didn't see this so ultimately it's my fault for not doing a good enough job. The picture is close up so it looks worse than it actually is (I'll probably do some touch up paint) and I'm just not going to make a stink about it, especially since I already brought it home. I was just more interested in knowing if there's any special techniques you've seen guys use to protect the rim when changing tires. We shouldn't have to tell the tire guys how to protect our rims, however, now that this has happened I'm inclined to be much more aggressive the next time.

I go to the local Discount Tires store. I tell them up front if they scratch them, they are buying them. Then you can bet they will be careful.

i work at a Chevrolet/Cadillac dealer and I have done every tire from a z06 to a 22 inch escalade wheel and have never scratched any if you proper tools and proper tire lube then your good the worst one I ever did was the corvette mag wheels they are soft but no scratches
also after they put the tires on did they do a alignment if so then that mark might be from the alignment machine head

+1 I have introduced myself to the local discount tire guys and stand there with them while they do it, never a problem... Flip em a 20 when they are done for a solid road force balance and no scratches on rims..

Happened to me at peerless tires. Minor scrape but I lost it.. Long story short they fixed my rim in one day good as new
I would demand they atleast try to fix them, yes they get scratched up pretty easy but for that small of a chip it should be easy for them to send them to a wheel repair and they color fill it with black (better than the silver against satin black) Btw most national chain tire shops have the policy of " if we damage it, we will fix it or else we will have to buy". Look into it

coming out of it with only that one small nick is probably his idea of being careful, if he wasn't careful, you would probably have 2 or 3 nicks in the rims.

I had defective (cracked) tires replaced at the dealer (bright wheels) with state of the art tire machine, scratched every spoke on every wheel, ended up taking the tires and wheels off a new Z on the lot, lucked out

thats brutal whoever was changing your tires is a crayon eater. i own a tire shop, the guy that changed them had the arm on the tire machine too close to the rim and when he brought the arm down it dug into the rim. we do lots up to 28" rims. its all about experience

I took mine in to a Chevy dealership on Monday to get new tires mounted and balanced. I did not need an alignment. I arranged the service around the weather, because I do not drive it in bad weather. I was told it would take about 2 hours. I set up the appointment at 9:30am so it would be done around 12pm and I could get to work in time and avoid the thunderstorm that was coming in the afternoon. When I arrived, they took the car immediately. About 11:30am I went back to the service desk to see if was almost done, since it had been about 2 hours. I could see the car on the lift with all four wheels on the car. They came back in and told me they're still working on it and only got the 2 front ones done. Obviously they were way off on their time estimate, so I had to grab a ride home since it wouldn't be done before work. I also made sure once it was done, that it would remain inside because of the thunderstorm that was about to hit. They respected that request. Later that day, I get a call saying they were done. They then proceeded to tell me that they noticed a "blemish" on the rim that wasn't there before they started working on it. (aka: we scratched your wheel when we mounted the tire) So I asked how bad it was, and they told me it was minor and they would have a repair guy resurface the entire wheel and apologized for the inconvenience. Day 2, the repair guy picked up the scratched wheel and took it back to his shop to repair. He finished it today, day 3, and I finally picked up my car. After taking over 2 days to put on 4 tires, I can't say I'm satisfied with the time, but I am satisfied with th results. The repaired wheel looks brand new..better than what it looked like when I arrived on Monday. It sucks that they scratched it, but I got a new wheel for free out of it. I may even take the rest of my wheels to this guy since they all have tiny nicks and scratches from stones. He only charges $100 per wheel. That's better than buying new wheels! Anyways, I thought I'd share my story since it was a coincidence the same thing happened to me a few days ago as well.

I had a bolt in the right rear, took it to the dealer and they had the car all day. Fixed the flat, screwed the wheel, tried to repaint, it looked like crap. I complained, they ordered a new rim and called me 3 days later when it arrived for the change. They ate the cost. The next tire change on all 4 is coming up soon and I have investigated "touchless" tire changing machine equipped places. Found another Chevy dealer and a Goodyear Tire that have them. I will be sure to walk the wheels with them before and after. I will also make sure they agree if they screw it up they replace it. If not, they don't get the work.
