Sorry I had to put this here.

My son started his first day of High school on tuesday, his first class of the day is Guess what?????
Auto shop First quarter they work on engines then 2nd quarter they do brakes. (he doesnt have it 2nd semester, he has weight lifting)

so we go in to the open house (you go to each class & listen to the teacher talk about what they are going to teach & what the students are expected to learn) first thing out of the teachers mounth is I HATE cars, they are a pricey, hunk of junk.

as you guys know my husband, The kids & I all love cars.

Once the teacher found out that my son did know something about cars, he told us that he can be the student leader for the class, showing the kids which wrench or what ever to use to get parts off.

How can someone teach students something when they hate the subject of what they are teaching?

My nephew had this same teacher a few years back (he took over the auto shop 4yrs ago, after the last teacher retired after teaching 27yrs (that teacher loved his job ( I know because I was one of his students))

They dont have text books in the class they are expected to go to www.CDXetextbook.com every night to look over the stuff they looked at via the hour they have.

but the good thing is ( i Dont know how its even possible) our high school auto shop is one of the best in the state. & hold some of the top honors for auto competions through out the state.

that sucks i had an awesome tech teacher, he too made me the shop forman but we ran ours a little different we still had class work but we also ran a full shop with customers also are class was 3 hours long, but i always found a way to spend close to 5 hours in the shop most days lol just auto tech and football lol

still made pretty good grades in the other classes to lol

Sounds like the kids excell without the help or guidance of this "teacher". The kids in your son's class will be better off from the knowledge he gained at home.

I asked him if we had a car that we knew what the problem was with it, if we could bring it in for the kids to figure it out & he said NO. we dont have time for that. lmao we where done with that in like a week, he gave up to two weeks for everybody to get a 100 on the test.....after that we could go out in the shop and the first thing we did was tare down engines

the funnest thing we got to do is booby trap one of the donated cars and have somebody come behind us and figure it out(just like what you suggested) we did some crazy stuff to that car lol

He also said that they learn more in his class than they do in a college course of the same thing. lol.

I start college for Automotive/ business in April lol.

Similar bewilderment, we were at the school in my daughters Spanish class. The teacher spoke to all the parents in English and then turned to the parents of the SPANISH speaking students!!!! Shouldn't those students be in an English class not an intro to you native stinckin’ language? BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

lmao yeah i never got that either of coarse there gonna get A's all yeah long they should be made to take a different foreign language

but then again if you need some body to copy off of.......lol

This was part of the reason for the "No child left behind" act from President Bush. There are many many schools using teachers for subjects they didn't go to college for... But that's a whole different discussion.

In my 11th grade we had a math teacher teaching our computer science class... He didn't know a whole lot about computers and all of us just played Quake 2 or Worms Armageddon. Its a shame that this happens but what else can you do when you have a shortage of teachers? Now if this shop class was something the teacher elected to teach and knows they can get out of it by having a competent student doing all the work
