Windshield replacement

I have got to get my windshield replaced due to a large crack. I'm sure some of you have experienced this already at some point. I have been calling around and getting prices, and was I in for a surprise when some places are wanting upwards of $700 and $800! This from what I understand is due to the HUD. I have a had a couple places mention getting a less expensive glass that the HUD may not be as bright on. Has anyone done this that might have any feedback on if the HUD was hard to see or if it was pretty much the same?

Wouldn't even consider going the cheaper route but we are talking like saving $400-$600.

If the windshields are like those for the Corvettes with HUD (and I'd guess they are), they are designed differently to 'reflect' the display clearly. I got a couple of chips in the windshield on my Vette (with HUD) & got quotes of $800-$1K to replace it. I've heard you can go with a regular windshield, however, your HUD won't be as clear/easy to see.

Yeah that's what the windshield places are saying but they aren't really saying how much of a difference in the two there is.

I've seen posts here where people say they have installed after market HUD systems without replacing the windshield and say it works. How well in comparison, I don't know; but I'm sure they'll be chiming in to provide better info on it ... good luck.

I have HUD on one of my Vette's and I just had the windshield replaced. I was quoted the thousand dollar price for the HUD friendly glass, or $300 for standard glass, not HUD. I opted to go with the $300 and figured I would just not be able to see the HUD in it, and I sacrificed that since I don't drive this particular Vette too much anyways. Much to my surprise, I can still see the HUD very well! I would say there is some lack of the reflection, but I'd guess I'm about 85% good, and that's good enough. At night, I see no difference.

I had mine replaced by my insurance last year and the cost for an OEM windshield replacement was almost $1,000 ($70 labor and $900 for the windshield). The place that replaced mine said the price difference between a HUD windshield and a non-HUD was only about $100.

OP, I recommend that you either go OEM or get a Pilkington windshield since them make the OEM windshields. Don't cheap out and get some no name brand windshield.

I take it you do not have glass coverage. I never had a policy that did not have full glass.

I should have bought a ZL1

Two of the companies I have talked to in town are the most reputable around. And one said $850 no other option and the other is saying $750 for the OEM and $250 for the aftermarket non-HUD.

I thought I had glass coverage but according to the insurance company its going to cost me my deductible, $500. Don't really want to have to do that, I had rather not have to do a claim. That's why I am considering the less expensive option.

A windshield claim should not effect your rates in any way. It's a safety issue. I would pay the deductible and have it done right. Also keep in mind that if there is an issue with replacement glass, or it's installation, you have your insurance company backing you up on the warranty.

FWIW...
Safelite replaced mine (HUD, Remote Start) with Pilkington (same brand as back window) for $572.00. Lifetime guarantee (whatever that means!), and HUD looks perfect. This was well under my deductible.

Geez fellas, call pilkington in Ohio. I bought some for my 2010 non heads up display, bought them to New Zealand. Cheap as chips for non heads up. Found them very helpful.
