Normal Price For A Custom Dyno Tune?

My local shop wants 650-700$ for a tune. He says this gives me up to 4 hours on their Dyno-Jet.

Looking at it this way...

I can buy the parts I want for $1,553 and then self install, and then 700 for a dyno tune. $2,250 out the door.

Or I can buy all the parts from Ted, which would include the SCT and the free email tune(s). $2,248 out the door.

Which is a better deal? I'm not sure I'd be getting a more quality tune from one or the other, is it really possible at this level of bolt ons to get a "better" tune from one place than another? I would like to have the graph and actual RWHP numbers.

Seems high for a dyno tune. I paid $350 with bolt-ons and now that I will be boosted they quoted me at $550 pre boost level. I will be tuning myself from now. I have no experience with Ted but have heard nothing but great things about him here on the forums.

Go with ted then go pay for a dyno pull for numbers. Teds tune includes afr wideband i think so youll be good there, ALSO you wont run the very real possibility of having a dyno "operator" who calls himself a tuner slap a half-assed email tune from hp tuners on your car and slightly tweak it having you leave thinking "cool, im tuned" when you really arent. At least with ted you have all the logs and can see the changes, he tunes you for the driving you do whike a lot of dyno shops will tune your car for WOT only. Not only that but with the sct youll have the option of running a race tune when your at the track.

So, long story short I wish I went that route myself I wouldve saved myself some money in the long run at the pace im modding.

Thanks for the info Fishin. Although the guy at my local shop is more than a self named tuner, he's been in the business of tuning cars for 30 years. One of the most reputable shops in MI probably.

For a good quality Dyno tune near you, I think its fair. I paid $550.00 in 2014 here in Cali. Overhead is expensive! Not to mention its local so if you want adjustments later they may do it gratis.

I paid 650 for my tune locally at a very well known shop. He did good, but still wouldve been cheaper in the long run to go through ted and his tunes are proven. One of my buddies in SoCal had that nightmare i described above. He paid them nearly 10k for a procharger install and they botched his tune....over, and over.....and over. He could barely drive home each time, horrible experience and they were also very well known and high priced. The cost doesent guarantee a good tune.

Ask each if they will tune the "Speed Density" side of the tune. Or do they only tune the "MAF" portion of the tune.

That will give you an idea of who is willing to put in the real effort for you.

A big +1 on ZO6 Bryan's advice. It's been my experience that most tuners make their custom tunes MAF only because they don't want to take the time to calibrate the speed density area of the tune. It requires logging the car on the street if the tuner doesn't have access to a load bearing dyno. There's a reason GM uses a blended tune and these car run their best when both the MAF and Speed Density areas are calibrated properly.

http://www.jakesautomotive.com/ (Dr. Phil) is 500 and MJD (former GM employee who does a ton of LS and LSA) is 650 those are probably the best local tuners for us not counting Livernois.

I went with JRE and I think it's fine.

Jake's is 115 for 3 dyno pulls and MJD I think is 100 for 2

I've heard of Dr. Phil, in fact my cousin just took his cammed and pullied ZR1 to him. I'm not aware of where he's located in SE MI though, does he work at Jake's? I've taken quite a few old hot rods to Jake's for tuning, they did a great job, just not sure about taking my new stuff to Jake's or not. Livernois says just to buy their MyCal tuner and email them exact mods and they'll get a tune for me and customize it after I send back the results (Just like Ted I'm guessing). If I ever spot a yellow ZL1 I'll be sure to say hi Rob

Think I'm going to try and get a hold of Dr. Phil.

I think I have the only yellow 14-15 convertible for a couple hundred miles around so it would be me if you see one. I am out on Woodward most Friday and Saturday evenings.

If you go to Jake's and get a tune supposedly it is Dr. Phil that does it but he is notoriously difficult to get to work on your car so I doubt that he does every tune that walks in the door. He doesn't work there, he just does tunes when he feels like it.

Ted does pretty much that but I would guess that Ted has more experience with email tunes. Not for sure but he is almost the only shop that advertises email tunes. If Livernois was going to do the same thing then I would definitely go with Ted over them.
