Custom exhaust prices?
Today I went to a local exhaust shop to get an estimate and was pretty surprised by what the guy had to say. My wife got me a magnaflow X pipe and mufflers for Father's Day so I was looking to get them installed. He quoted me $150 just to cut out the factory H-pipe and mufflers and weld in the new pieces. The tips would be $90 more. I asked about doing a full 2.5 inch exhaust and he said $400 plus the $90 for the tips. Now the kicker, I spoke with him a while back and he quoted $500 for the entire 2.5 inch exhaust with tips. So 500 and he supplies all parts, pipe, labor, etc. but when I supply the parts it will be $400. Something just doesn't seem right about that.
So with all that said, how much did it cost you guys with custom exhausts? Is the price I was quoted fairly normal? Unfortunately there are only 2 muffler shops in town. If others agree it was too high, I will shop around in surrounding areas |

Everywhere is different. Moto I believe said they tried to charge him something outrageous like $400 for a muffler delete in Cali. In my local area, on my 350z I had custom piping from the cats back and it was only $175 for it. Ask around your area and verify!

Your only paying half the price of a brand name cat back system.

$400+$90=$490. If they supply parts, $500 total. That's only a $10 difference

When I first got my car the first thing I had to do was add mufflers, It was my first car and I had absolutely no idea about any aftermarket stuff and didn't know about the forum either. I looked around and ended up going to a shop that charged me $980 for an X pipe and magnaflows in 2.5 inch piping. I got raped and didnt even know till I found this forum. For that price I could of had a couple full 3 inch catback options to choose from.
But you should shop around and see what you find. A normal price for labor on all this should be about 200 plus the tips. So that'll put you at about 300. 500 would be a bit on the high side |

Perfectly. I'd say 400-500$ is a pretty good deal now a days. Thats 150$ more then me with a x pipe out in there. There is probably a tiny little wiggle room in the price. But I would be weary of a quote lower then 300$. Having good quality exhaust work is defiantly worth the price. And your paying less then the performance systems out there. Edit: Shop I went to does restoration work on old 911's and classic cars. Was surrounded by hot rods and crazy custom build dragsters. So inknew my price would be a little high but worth it |

Exactly my point. If I already have the X pipe and mufflers, all I need him to supply is the tips and piping. It's just odd to see $10 difference. Maybe it's because he does a discount on installation when you buy mufflers from him? I don't know but 400 seems really high for new pipes and labor.

Yeah, I gave up on the a muffler delete out here. Even a customer of mine (who does exhaust work) wanted as much. I'm in the driveshaft business and MANY of my customers won't charge you labor on something like a u-joint installation -IF- you buy the part from them. Kind of the way it is.

This just in! I bit the bullet and did the muffler delete. Went with just straight pipes. It sounds pretty knarly without being obnoxious. Still a $300 bill here in the Republik.

When I had my axle back installed the shop charged me 1 hour labor to remove and install the new axle back. When I had my LT headers and cat back installed, they charged me 3 hours labor (was quoted 4 hours but the guy said since the engine bay is so open he was able to do it faster than he thought) for the work. This specific shop charges $100 an hour but another shop down the road charges $125 an hour. |
