Will the new camaro SS convert to the new 5.5 liter V8 set for the C7 Corvette??
Next Gen Corvette
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Corvette Racing boss Doug Fehan confirms new 5.5L V8 for Sebring debut by Sam Abuelsamid (RSS feed) on Jan 2nd, 2010 at 7:55PM Corvette C6.R GT2 - Click above for high-res image gallery Back in August when General Motors introduced the all-new GT2 class Corvette C6.R, it ran downsized 6.0-liter version of the 7.0-liter V8 from the long-dominant GT1 car. At the launch, Corvette Racing program manager Doug Fehan told us the 6.0-liter was just an interim engine. With revised GT rules on tap for 2010, GM was already planning a brand-new engine for its race Vette. Unlike the 6.0/7.0, which is a ground-up race engine that only shares basic architectural dimensions with the production small block, the 2010 C6.R's V8 is a new 5.5-liter unit that will indeed be derived from the production engine found in roadgoing Corvettes. In fact, the 5.5-liter race engine will be built at GM's Performance Build Center alongside ZR1 and Z06 V8s. Fehan has confirmed that the 5.5 is running on the dyno and will make its race debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March. We don't have any additional details on the new engine yet, although we were told earlier that it is based on the next-generation production small-block, which we expect to see in the Corvette soon. ------------------- so if the corvette goes to a 5.5 liter v8 with direct injection putting out between 436 and 475hp ...do you think the camaro SS will follow suit? or will the camaro SS stay with the 6.2 liter V8? and 556 hp LSA 6.2 ?

Nothing in this article says that the engine for the C7 will be 5.5 liter, it just says the new motor will be production based. The 5.3 is based on the LS1/2 as well. You can make many different displacements out of a similar engine block with different bore and stroke.
The specific engine size there is likely due to rules. I'm not well versed on whether there was a GT class engine rules change for 2010, but there is likely a reason for a lower displacement higher revving V8, it could also be fuel mileage as they may have looked at their primary rivals and realized they need to tone down the engine size to get the mileage to keep up. Corvette racing did not have a wonderful year vs the smaller displacement Porsches...

No replacement for displacement. I hope the Camaro sticks with the 6.2L

Engine is being developed locally in St Catharines. Is aluminum with DI and there are no carryovers from other small blocks(all new design, cam in different place). Tests have shown about 20-25% more horsepower.
From a source on the net..and for what its worth..I prefer the 6.2liter v8 too.. wish they just slap direct injection in and called it a day. Supposedly this new 5.5 liter direct injection v8 ...if it can put out 20 percent more hp then the ls3 then we're scoping out 475hp V8 getting better gas mileage too. Can't argue with it yet I believe the camaro SS will run with the ls3 and L99 for a year or two after the 5.5 liter runs in the new c7.. (just for those guys who think the corvette and the camaro should NOT share exact motors so for the most part...its advertised hp differential for the most part..)

Does the Z06 have a 6.0L LS7 like the race car did? No? Then why do you think this 5.5L (restricted displacement due to racing regulations) will be any different?

GM likes its engines to displace a lot. For years they could have produced engines that displace less but perform the same, but those engines might be less fun for those of us who play with them.

So...there is a new race engine coming, and from that you infer that it will be used in the C7 and possibly future Camaros? Interesting.

Big, low-tech engines cost less.

Yes, I know it doesn't say the 5.5 will be a production engine, but we have already had many "hints" that the next generation SBCs will be both smaller and have DI, certainly the new 5.5 fits those descriptors. And they don't have to work as hard and last longer. And low tech is really just an opinion, plenty of modern technology can be found in the LS engines. Overhead cams have been around for 100 years, just because something has more parts doesn't make it "higher tech".
