Gentlemen's Agreement regarding HP

I was looking through the internet. I actually didn't know this, but German automobiles actually have a speed governor rated at around 250KM/h even though certain sections on the autobahn have no speed restriction.
My question, does anyone know what at what speed all US spec cars have to be set to by US law? Does it vary by US manufacturer? What is the top speed of a US spec Camaro (untuned)? Very curious here. Thank you.

As far as I know there is no law for governing the top speed of vehicles set forth by the Goverment for vehicle manufacture's. The Camaro is limited to 155Mph from GM.

Hi Amphi,

I had a 07 Mustang GT and the velocity was the speed cap at 240 Km/h (Fuel injection cut) I don't know about Camaro, but I am 100% sure I will test it too

Most vehicles are speed governed so as not to exceed the speed limitations/speed ratings of the original equipment tires.

I've heard 155 mph as well from a couple sights now.

So if we have true Z rated tires then they should not be limited ...

The governed speed also has to do with the stability of the car at speed as well, just because your tires are rated for ludicrous speed the rest of the car may decide it wants to leave the roadway at mere lightspeed!!!

In other words aerodynamics play a role as well!!

Ok, here are the limits based on trim level:

LS: 118 MPH/190 KPH
1LT: 118MPH/190 KPH
2LT: 155MPH/249.4 KPH
1SS: 155MPH/249.4 KPH
2SS: 155MPH/249.4 KPH

This is due to original tire restrictions. The tires on the LS and 1LT are only rated to 118MPH, where as the higher trims have different tires rated to 155.

Really, I can't belive that a 300 HP engine only can reach 199 KPH if that speed is reached for a lot of other cars with less HP and performance.

Anyone has tested this?

It's not the 300hp engine that sets the upper limit. It's the tires.

READ the thread again. It is speed limited do to TIRES and possibly stability. Since the LS and 1LT both have essentially the same body (except maybe the RS) what is left out of the equation is tires.

But for example, if I buy a 1LT and after I buy the wheels and tires of 2LT speed limit changes or can be changed?

Tuning software can change or remove the speed governor.
