Headers with Stock
Anyone have long tubes with hi-flow cats hooked up to stock exhaust? I am looking to get headers in the next week or so and am curious how loud it will be on the stock exhaust. I have cutouts so I can make it loud when needed, but I am curious how loud it is when the cutouts are closed.
Say on a scale of 1-10 with a 1 being the stock pipes with stock cats and 10 is so loud you can't even sit in it what would you rate it? I would love to find someone in the Denver area that has this set-up but have had no luck. |

I have 2” headers flowing through off-road pipes with a stock catback. It’s hardly louder than stock at idle. The only tome you’re really going to hear it is with moderate throttle. It gets pretty loud at wide open throttle, but it isn’t to the point of drone or obnoxiousness.

Had that setup for a long time. Really liked it. Still miss it sometimes. Really screams at WOT, but idling around town is super quiet.
Here's my car on the dyno. 2" TSP Long Tubes, off-road extensions (no cats) through the stock SS Catback.

Shibbs video covers it really well - it's SUPER chill zero drone under light throttle, but still gets very loud and pleasant when pushed.
I have AR 1.875" long tubes though high-flows cats and an x-pipe into the stock exhaust. I also have cutout's behind the rear axle, which are almost always open. Through mufflers, it's about a 2.5/10 for noise at idle, and about a 6.5/10 at wide open throttle with some RPM. It's a really nice smooth wail too. With the cutouts back there it's a 5/10 just putting around and a 9.5/10 when you've got your foot buried and the tach swinging way around to the right - just how I like it. Stock cat-back doesn't hurt the power either - it's a great option - especially with cutouts!

One other point to keep in mind - LS3 mufflers offer less dampening than L99 mufflers. So, the same setup on an L99 car would probably be even a few ticks quieter.

Have this on an l99 car. Super quiet around town but will make noise when you want it to.

I just had this setup, and liked it a lot. Only reason I changed was to see if that was hampering my engine and causing low dyno numbers. Doubt it changed a lot though.
I loved that it was quiet at idle, and zero drone going down the road. But with LTs and cat-delete, it was plenty loud at WOT. I have a magnaflow competition catback now, and it's much deeper at idle, but WOT is pretty similar volume-wise.

I had stock manifolds with o/r connection pipes through the stock c/b. Like others have said, it is a pretty good sounding system. The stock cats block about 70 percent of the sound. That's why they're so quiet stock.

My long tubes were one of the first mods I did. Not a big change in exhaust sound. After adding a tru X-pipe, highflow cats, 40 series mufflers, big difference. Still fairly quiet just cruising on the freeway.

The OE cats make all the difference in the exhaust volume on these cars. You can straight pipe one of these with stock cats and they are still reasonably tame.
