Head bolt torque....

So while reassembling my L99 I was torqueing down the heads, but 22ftlb seemed very light. I know the 90deg then 70 def adds more but it just seems like the spec should be more like 22ftlb then 40 then 60 or whatever. Anyone else seem like this is kinda light?

Oh and I’m using new GM performance head bolts

Torque sound right. If you have a digital torque wrench to do the angles with, it will show you a final toque after each time you angle the bolts. Probably around 100ft/lb or more final torque after you angle it. Make sure you clean out the bolt holes of oil and debris before you put bolts in, as it could potentially break the block and throw off your torque.

Break the block? I would imagine you would have to crank on it for that to happen.

Nope not really all that hard. If there’s oil or any kind of liquid In the bolt holes it can hydraulically crack the block when you torque everything down.

The 22 ft lbs is just to snug them up. After that, the correct bolt tension is achieved by turning the prescribed number of degrees.

More degrees=more bolt tension.

Torque is an indirect method of determining bolt tension and is highly variable depending on condition of the threads (friction and debris). The angle method is unaffected by the condition of the threads and is a direct indication of bolt stretch and gasket compression.

The second run of torque angle gets pretty tough if you don't have a good breaker bar/torque wrench. You'll want some leverage.

What I used to torque the heads (and all angle torqued items - digital and audio):

That’s a real good buy no doubt. Snap on wants 700+ for there’s.

Wow that's a great price for a digital torque wrench. I wonder how it compares to the snap on.

It does well. The snap on is so over priced, its not even an option for me.

It's pretty easy to visualize 90 deg or 45 deg. 70 deg is a little tougher.

It's cool that the same gyros that are in your cell phone are now being installed in wrenches to measure degrees turned.
