Disappointing cai story

Bought a kn air charger.... it was on for a week and the car starts to pull back intermittently at fractions of a second often when cruising anywhere between 60 and 75... tried cleaning maf sensor, nope, actually the pulling back got heavier....called dynosteve and he says put the stock cai back on and see if it still pulls back, well I did, got back on the highway to run car and see and bam, the pulling back stopped.... what a waste of a 300 dollar kn cai....it's been cleaned, repackaged in original box and ready for return....

thanks DynoSteve....

That’s a bummer. No problems with my Cold Air Inductions intake and I haven’t heard anyone complain about CAI actually. It’s a little more money but it’s a good quality product. Roto-Fab makes a good kit too. And I agree With ls3Blackwidow’s statement, a freshly oiled filter that’s still wet can cause issues.

I bought one used from a friend who was going turbo and I have had zero issues with it.

I have a K&N cai on my SS and zero problems at all. Sounds great and pretty comparable to the Roto fab one and $200 cheaper.

Try resetting the PCM by doing the free fuse pull. Install your K&N filter system. Pull fuses 5 and 20 under the hood and let the car sit overnight. Reinstall the fuses the next day. When you start the car drive normal and let the pcm “re-learn.” It may adapt to the increased air and correct your problem.

I have run a CAI brand system for 1 year with no problems and enjoy it.

to be honest i am really curious to know where the issue was....facts say that placing my stock air filter back on stopped the issue...at first once the kn air charger was put on car step by step correctly, there were no issues for a few days and then the slightest pull backs were happening...evidently the maf was having issues? could it be not enough air going thru the hose that leads out of front chamber of cai to the engine not be enough(pcv hose)?....i mean the air flow i assume was increased because the giant kn air filter was exposed....issues or no issues are the responses but just curious to know what was the actual problem...to late now, kn heading back to factory...im gonna go roto fab next

I would send back the K&N and get a good cold air system. The K&N I had on my car was junk, I bought it with it, it was a hot air induction system, no sealing off from the hot underhood air. CAI is one of the best and has been dyno proven by Jannetty when they tested multiple set ups. Works especially well with a JRE scoop

You could have one of the weak maf sensor's , many camaros came from the fatory with maf sensor that could not handle any changes to the motor.

The good ones are marked with a letter before numbers there stamped with say like "k23" and a weak one would just be stamped with only numbers like "43"

Was a big problem with early SS cars, I'd look in to it

Yeak Shark, I would check this out. Pull your MAF when you get a chance. The weak MAfs can work fine on a stock configuration, but once airflow increases they are unable to scale properly.

I know in other post you have talked of headers and cat backs, etc. Did you ever get them and install them? Was it tuned? If so, did you get the CAI after or before tune?

Gm stock MAF sensors are still the best ? Or is there a aftermarket better version ?
