Which one first??

This is a 2 part question.
With gas heading for over $3.50 a gallon I need to sqeeze every MPG out I can.
So do I get a CAI??
OR
I have noticed the exhaust pipes are getting more and more black soot inside the tips.
So do I get a catch can first??

Thanks.

PS
When you install a CAI does your engine tend to run lean?? No tune.

You'll never re-coup the cost of the mods in increased mpg's. If that is the only reason to do it, don't.

The black soot is more likely from a rich condition rather than oil residue - probably not an indicator that you need a catch can. These cars tend to run a little rich as a safety margin - lean is very bad.

I'd get the CAI... but not for MPGs. The best thing you can do for increased mileage is keep your tires inflated to spec and ease up on the throttle

Agreed.

A no tune cai won't mess with the AFR that much. During closed loop it will adjust to 14.7:1 AFR anyway.

That was my second guess. My '78 did the same thing. but I keep hearing all those people saying "You have to get a catch can!"

I'm already getting 19.7 mpg in the city and about 29 on the highway. So I can keep my foot out of it most times ('cept those times around the chargers and mustages). Oh I want the HP/Torq bump too

Catch can is still a good idea. This is what 400 miles of cold weather crap kept out of the intake looks like.

I see you are in FL so your catch in warmer temps would look more like this which was a summer catch from my LS3.

Ok that pretty much says which one get done first. Does this depend the way you drive?

This is a daily driver 300+ miles a week. If I raced or drove hard more often there would be more.

My thread with more info. All I can say is I'm glad I bought the catch can.
