Paint??

Is it just me, or does the paint on your camaro seem to etch and scratch very, very easily?? Granted mine is black, but I've owned black cars before, and none of them had paint as easy to damage as my camaro. A bug splattered on my car late last night. This morning I cleaned it off, and the paint had already etched into the shape of the splatter!!! D*mn I used to wax my black 84 TA w/out washing it and it never scratched. My 99' formula could drive through a rock slide and wouldn't get scratched, but I look wrong at my 2010 and it gets a scratch! WTF?!

I think if you keep a good coat of wax on the car you should have no problem. When my car was two weeks old I washed and clay barred it. I couldn't believe how much crap I got off with the clay bar on a new car. I then waxed it with MEGUIARS tech 2.0 and it looks great. Noticed some bird terd on it a week later and it came right off and there was no etching left behind. Just remember not to use an orbital buffer or do not put on or take off wax in a circurlar motion. Just wipe front to back or back to front.

My paint is fine... 3 months, 8000 miles only one chip... there is another thread around here somewhere and it suggested that some colors are more prone to chip than others.... IOM apparently is NOT one of those colors prone to chipping...

shaner74 your not alone on this one, the paint on these cars are horrendous. That's water based for yeah, even my local body shops are complaining about a new law where they can only use water based paint. My 95 Jeep Yj has better paint then this thing and I can fly down grid roads and mud and she won't chip. My camaro has tons of chips on the side and I do have the splash guards as well.

Camaropete from the other thread:

Everyone keeps talking about GM "figuring out how to make the paint more durable" or talking about paint chips on their car as if it is a paint or process problem. The GM Oshawa plant has won award after award for being one of the best auto production plants in North America and the world (below is from Wikipedia). This is one of the reasons it was chosen as the birthplace of the Camaro.

"The plant won the J.D. Power Gold Award for initial quality in 2006, 2005, 2003, 2002; as well a numerous other individual awards for the specific models it produces. In 2007, the plant won silver for initial quality, and a Gold Best in Segment award for the Pontiac Grand Prix, and Bronze Best in Segment for the Monte Carlo. In all, the plant has won 19 J.D. Power awards for quality since 1999. In recognition of that achievement, J.D. Power awarded the Founder's Award to the Car Plant in the summer of 2008; it is an award that has been presented only six times in the lengthy history of J.D. Power & Associates. Harbour Consulting rated Oshawa #1 (building the Impala and Monte Carlo) as the second most efficient in North America, the top-rated in the study was Oshawa #2 (building the LaCrosse and Grand Prix)."

The paint used on the Camaro is the same paint used on just about every other GM vehicle and specifically ones produced out of the Oshawa complex.

I go back to my points made above regarding the design of the Camaro. It just exposes points on the car to road debris differently than any other car out there.

As I said, if you are driving this car on gravel roads or heavily cindered roads, take precautions to protect your car. The same would happen with any car in those conditions. Stop blaming paint or production as I feel they have nothing to do with the chipping that some people are seeing.

I'm not talking about chips, but rather etching and scratching. Some sap got on the roof and I cleaned it off within a few hours. Well, the paint had already etched! The paint seems extremely soft, more like bartop epoxy or something along those lines.
