How would it look if the faux vents on the rear fenders were blacked out? What is the best way to do this? I was thinking, on a silver car, to black out the center and shade the edges a little in a slightly darker silver, fading toward the fender surface.
They still wouldn't be functional, but I think it'd look cool. Opinions? PhotoChops? |

why don't you get onboard with the guy who is gonna make the hood scoop "functional" and just cut holes in your soon to be brand new 30K car so that the wheel scoops are functional as well.

i am going to make my hood scoop functional, depending on how important that area is i may make the vents functional, the problem is that that quarterpanel is HUUUGE and its a structural component not just a tacked on body panel. so if your trying to do somthing with it and you mess up its gonna be bad.

If I try it myself, I'll go vinyl. That way, if I don't like it, it'll be easy to take off without damage.
I'm sure as hell not going to go cutting on a rear fender! That could get ugly real fast! |

It wouldnt be that expensive to make them functional, bring into your local body shop and have them cut the vents out with a plasma torch. The only think that would be a little costly is the repaint. Its simple mods like that, that will really spruse up the looks of the car. If you look at them on the concept it sure does help bring the car together.

I sure wouldn't cut into a structural support mechanism just for a visual effect. You could have a failure of catastrophic proportions! An air brush artist is where I intend to look when I'm ready to give the open appearance.

Having flat black vinyl over each vent could provide a relatively believable illusion that they're open & functional from a distance and when up close, they could actually be viewed as a nice touch: sort of a subtle striping accent. It's an idea that has potential, albeit I would not do it to my car. At least not until I see someone pull it off in person, for that is not the kind of thing photoshops can really put into perspective.
And yes, I am going to have to side with the overall consensus here that cutting the vents open to make them functional is out of the question. That is a rust case waiting to happen. I am not going to sacrifice the structural integrity of an already splendid-looking vehicle because I am achy-breaky over the original concept. |

Hey GM: We want flat black vinyl for the rear fender vents! I'd pay $50 for a set.

In '69 there were two vent treatments, one was simply indentations in the sheetmetal and all body colored, the other had chrome and black trim over the body which gave an appearence of open vents.

is it just me or does it seem a little ricey to put black vinyl in there, since its trying to make something look like it works when it doesnt. im not saying that i dont think it would look good but i think it is definately falling within the definition of rice....
