How do the back-up sensors work?

yesterday, i parallel parked my car and i didnt hear any noise from the back up sensors or anything like that.

i referred to the owner manual and it said that red lights near the back seats start coming on at a certain distance?? and then when you get really close it starts beeping??

can anyone please clarify this for me, because i was under the impression that i was pretty close to the car behind me and i didnt hear or see anything...

any pictures would be great too!

Edit:

don't have the little circles... nvm

First off there are NO lights. The warnings you get are beeps only. The faster the beeps, the closer you are to an object. Make sure you go into the config on the radio and make sure they are turned on.

Sounds like they are turned off.

How it works is ultrasonic echo time. Same way a submarine knows how fast an incoming torpedo is speeding toward them. Or a boat fish finder.

It comes with the 2LT and 2SS standard. According to the 'build your own' site at chevrolet.com, it comes with the optional Convenience and Connectivity package available for the 1LT as well.

In my experience, once you get the solid tone, you are within 12 inches of something. When I hear the fast beeping, I slow to a crawl and stop when I hear the tone.

They send and receive ultrasonic radio waves, which bounce off obstacles and alert you to their presence.

but here's a quote from the manual:

"The display is located in the center
of the rear seat back filler panel
trim and uses three color-coded lights
to provide distance and
system information."

If you have an early model Camaro you don't have them if I recall. Look at the rear of the car if you have litltle circles on your bumper you have the system.

I was told in another thread on this subject that they never installed the LED's in the rear window. It looks like they should be there, but they're not. Apparently there's a new owners manual available that has the comment about the lights removed. I haven't verified this.....

I have the second printing of the manual, and there is no mention of lights along with the URPA system. See pages 8-42 and 8-43.

I guess yours was built before they actually started putting them on the cars... One consolation though, they made the price go up a couple hundred dollars...

Really? I thought there was a miniature arm that came out and felt around behind the car.
