Placing Order Over The Phone

What is everyone's opinion on this?

A dealer I had contacted called me today and informed me they were allocated 5 and I was the first person they've contacted about it (ie- I'm #1 on their list).

Obviously someone would jump on it if I passed it up. They are asking only sticker price, no more. And $1000 down.

My next week or two are going to be pretty busy (GM chose a bad time to start ordering for me) so I inquired if it could be done over the phone. He said yes, took all my info and what I wanted to order (SS2, Silver Ice Metallic, Black Leather, RS Package, Auto, Sunroof) and told me I could mail a check for the $1000.

I confirmed (verbally) the options and that the price was the same as what I came up with (using the info online) and he said that he had the same price in front of him ($37,275).

After the deposit is received he said he could mail, or eMail, me confirmation (unless I can get to the dealership soon).

Since I haven't mailed the check yet I can still back out (though I'm not planning on it). It would probably make the dealer angry, but at least I wouldn't have to go through trying to get my $1000 back.

I know some people were talking about ordering from CamaroScotty and having the car shipped to their local dealer. I assume that would have been the same as over the phone?

Just want to make sure I didn't make a horrendous mistake before I send the deposit.

I did my over the phone, too. No biggie.

Just make sure you get the terms in writing - at least an e-mail saying what the price will be.

I'm in the "minority" it seems, and maybe I'm just and old guy, but if the dealer were within driving distance, I go see the dealer in person.

I like to talk to the salesperson in person, and get everything in writing.

I have a drop ship order to Alaska, the rest are all coming to the dealership to pick up the car. All of it was over the phone, and we took charge card deposits (Yes, you're protected by Visa & Mastercard...hmmmmmm)

This brings up a question.

The dealer was going to take a credit card deposit. He took my card # and expiration date, put me on hold and when he came back he asked if I could send a check in instead.

Any reason why they'd prefer a check?

I'd prefer talking to them in person also. And they ARE in driving distance. But I'm going to be busy the next week or two. I doubt I'm going to have the time to take the trip until at least the first week of November. And by then, their allotment would be gone I'm sure.

Yes, it doesn't cost them anything in fees to cash it.

The ones I've found selling at MSRP are-

Bennett Chevrolet (allotted 8, and 15 on their list)

Elkins Chevrolet (2 orders taken so far, not sure how many more they have)

Perry Egan Chevrolet in Ocean City (allotted 5 and I got #1 assuming I don't get info that it was a bad idea)

A couple more I can't think of off the top of my head. But they were already through their initial allotment.

If that's the only reason, I'm ok with that. I just got a little worried when CamaroScotty mentioned the protection Visa and Mastercard offer. I feared maybe the dealer had something up their sleeve to cheat me.

Not that I don't trust the dealer, no more than any other dealer, but $1000 is a fair amount of money to part with and possibly lose.

mostly for the fee they'd pay. We do it out of conveinence. they of course, wouldn't put your order in until the check clears, I'd bet... CC's are good for both buyer and dealer.

No, I assume they probably wouldn't place it officially until it clears. I understand that. As long as I have an order locked in, I'm happy. LOL
