is a dealership a franchise of a the auto company they sell cars from?

I aways though that a franchise that part of the money goes back to the parent company but in the case of a dealership they dont.

The dealers essentially buy cars from the manufacturer and then sell them to end consumers. That oversimplifies things greatly but yes a large part of the money goes back to the manufacturer. Dealerships are franchises. Their franchise with a manufacturer allows them to sell and service vehicles from that manufacturer.
