Question Any automatics bust an axle yet?

I am running 315 drag radials at around 500 rwhp and recently smoked the posi. I was wondering if anyone with an automatic has busted an axle yet. I'm researching the options for the diff. and am concerned that once I beef that up an axle may go. Seems its been all stick shifts having the problem so far unless I missed a post somewhere.

Not that I have seen or heard, but that doesn't mean it can't or won't happen eventually. Rock'em till they snap, then upgrade.

You broke the posi with a auto?! On top of that the posi let go before the axles? This is the first I have heard of this. Did you have stock gears or aftermarket? People have double your power on slicks with the stock center section. I would think the axles would snap way before anything in the stock center section on a auto trans car. To answer your question yes, many with auto trans have snapped the axles but no one has busted the diff. with a auto.

This has happened to quite a few folks with less HP. Jannetty has a fix ready to go for those that need. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88108

Based on the info to date, the Camaro is still weak in the rear end.

1. Stock axles/CV joints break
2. Posi unit goes south for the "1 wheel peel"

IRS is beefier than the old 7.5 in the 4th gen. but still needs a lot of work to make it reliable for those interested in spending a decent amount of time at the strip.

I foresee quite a few solid axle swaps for the drag racers when they hit the market.

Yes we did smoke the posi- getting the one wheel peel. We are not shock loading the axles like the manual tranny but I guess spinning those big sticky tires is enough to hurt the posi.

So far so good for me. I'm at 550/555 and have run both drag radials and now slicks. Even with 20+ 1.60 60's I haven't broke anything. Good thing I can only leave at 1200 rpm. Once the converter goes in and I can launch at 26 or 2800 all bets are off. I'll keep you guys posted.

I have an L99. I think I broke an axle. Not sure. During a hard acceleration I felt a gear slipping. At first thought it was the tranny, now I think it was probably an axle. Not sure. Drove home with no problem.

Why don't you know what happened? Did you just do this? You drove home and had no problem? So your saying maybe, there is not a problem? Sorry, but I'm confused.

There is a problem. It is the tranny or axle. I just happended about 5 miles from home. I tried twice. There is a gear grinding sound and slipping. At first thought it was my tranny but now I think probalby an axle about to go. There is just enough left that it is not totally slipping. Does that sound like it could be an axle?

Definitely gonna be easier with an manual but with 500RWHP and 315 DRs I'm sure that you'll eventually break shit if you're launching it. As said above the rear ends on these cars still aren't that strong. I dunno if you have any wheel hop or not but if you do that's gonna increase your chances 10 fold.

I'd definitely be interested what happens with the higher stall. I have been considering a 3000-3200 stall myself. For now I am regearing to 370's and thinking about having Jannety beef up the posi (which I've already smoked). I've had a tranny and engine retune from Vector which seemed to help but I can only get a 2.15 60' with the bad posi slipping.
