Help me stay a Chevy guy

After a long succession of F series trucks, an Excursion, an Explorer, and 8 Mustangs, I came over to Chevrolet in 2008 when I bought my Silverado. This was influenced in no small part by the fact that the Camaro was then a coming event--I knew I would want one. An added factor was the horsepower offered by the 6.0 gas Silverado. Anyway, I got my early order SS in July of 2009, and life has been good until now. NOW, my Silverado is at the dealer, with the engine "torn down" per instructions from "technical assistance". This started last Thursday, and they still can't (won't?) tell me what is wrong. Truck has 53K miles, and the dealer has done all of the oil changes. I have a GM provided rental HHR...
The crux of this missive is that my ardor for Chevrolet is starting to fade, and that is depressing, because I love my Camaro so much. I am having to listen to no small amount of "I told you so"...."Government Motors"...et al, crap from my friends. It IS embarrassing, considering the mileage on the truck. I don't think I will be able to trust the darn truck again, and find myself pondering the Ram.

Any words of wisdom or comfort? Anybody else had any GMT-900 engine trouble? (I have the 6.0 AFM)

Thanks for reading.

I maintain a fleet of Chevy trucks in my business ,and I've never had a motor failure in a 6.0. Some of them have over 300,000 miles on them(those are leaving at the end of the year) ,but anyhow I've had all the makes and settled on Chevy about 10 years ago because I get the most out of them for my business for the money. You got to do what feels right ,but I will buy chevy trucks until they give me a reason not too.(Maybe you just got yours)

And by the way, I'm by no means a GM fanboy. I mainly love mopars and also have owned many fords. Just speaking from my experience with chevy trucks.

The Dodge trucks do look very interesting though.

My Camaro is the 1st GM product I've owned in years. I sold my 350Z to get the SS, my husband is on his 3rd Ram truck (since '96) and just loves them - no problems other than tires and oil changes.. Good product, would recommend to anyone..

I have had ford trucks in the past & I have owned my chevy pick up for a few years lol.

Ok with the fords always had issues with the rear ends in the 90s pick ups.
my 77 got 10mpg no matter if it was hauling a full bed of hay or a trailer or nothing at all.

now my silverado is a 5.3 l v8 & has almost 150,000 miles on it, we have never had it in the shop & had no issues with it. of course before we owned it it was a formens truck (leather seats lol)
love it & most likely will not buy a new truck since I HATE the looks of them

I've owned GM (69 Firebird, 76 Grand Prix, 88 Nova which was a toyota, 96 Sonoma, 2000 Silverado extended cab) Chrysler (Talon aka Mitsubishi eclipse, PT Cruiser), Toyota (Prius, FJ Cruiser), Mitsubishi (86 Sapporo, 06Outlander), Subaru, Honda and Ford (late 80's EXP). The Sonoma and Silverado never gave me a problem. I traded both with over 100,000 miles. I did have several issues with the Nova, Prius, PT Cruiser, Talon, Sapporo and Ford. The 76 Grand prix and 69 Firebird had issues as well but the 69 was found in a barn and the 76 was well built in the 70's. My Step father has had a string of F150's and he had brake problems so often it became a running joke/jab. I had the Silverado and towed a 20 foot boat every weekend I don't think I ever put new pads on it. I may have right around 90k. If I had to rank cars by my experience it would be GM, Subaru,Ford, Toyota, Chrysler, Mitsubishi.

Just my 1 1/2 cents

I go to GM for cars and Mopar for trucks, both have been extremely reliable over the years,The only exception was the 73 Chevy Vega I owned for a year (cardboard engine). The dealer should not only tell you whats wrong, with 53000 miles they should fix it free.... I just bought my 3rd Ram truck and if its as reliable as the last two I'll have it for 8 or 9 years like the last one. I would have bought a silverado but the styling didn't cut it. My neighbor has 2 Chevy trucks and they just get routine maintainance at the dealer, they see a lot of hard service and have had no problems... The Ford F150 I had went thru a transmission, rear axle, camshaft and lifters and I hate to admit I even owned it.......

So get on down to the dealer and find out whats the problem!!!!!

We have a 97 Chevy 1500 Express Conversion Van. We have beat the crap out of it year after year. Towing well beyond its capacity (C5Fest towed 9,000 lbs) with a Vortec 5700. it has 185,000 miles on that and fully half of those are heavy towing. The only major thing we have changed on it (years ago) was the transmission since my wife accidentely ran over an object in the driveway and broke it. Oops...

Don't get me wrong, I love Chevy, but as far as reliability goes, I've never been more satisfied than I have been with Honda. They don't offer anything to compete with a Silverado though. Honda = change oil and filter, add gas, do required maintenance (which isn't much) and drive forever. I don't know how they do it, but they do. I wish GM was as good. They are heading there, but aren't there yet. Chevy's are a lot more exciting vehicles by far. They just aren't as reliable, and don't hold up as well over the long haul as a Honda. What can you say? I sympathize with you.

Or you could go down to the Ford dealer and take a gander at the new 6.2L.

I'm sure there are people on some of the Ford Forums with issues, also. I'm sorry for your troubles, but give them a chance to take care of you. Every company has an issue every now and then. It's about how they back up there warranty that matters. Theirs a member that has had engine problems with there LT Camaro. Chevy has replaced the engine a few times. The last I read on the situation, GM had approved them to return the car, they were just determining weather to buy back the car or exchange it.

the only problem with that motor is the noisey piston slap you get, but that usually doesn't kick in until higher miles.

i think they are taking you for a ride..... that motor is extremely stout.
