5w-30 for non-track duty. GM on their track checklist recommends Mobil 1 15w-50 for track duty.

The lowest the fans can be turned on is 192 without a custom operating system.

^^^ Not true. There is a system operating patch available in EFILive that allows fan control down to 168 F. I have a 160 t-stat and my car runs a consistent 5-6 degree cooler compared to stock.

That would constitute a custom operating system

Negative. It's not a custom operating system. Just a "patch" or add on to the existing operating system.

I certainly mean no disrespect but as soon as you change something in a operating system it becomes a custom operating system, hence my original post comment.

There is a lot of real good information in this Thread regarding the disadvantages of running an Aluminum Engine too cold and oil temps that are too cold.

Ted.

It's actually more than that. Since you're so interested I can explain the difference. A custom operating system takes a few steps to activate and requires a full rewrite of the entire operating system first, then the programmable memory (tune or calibration) portion is flashed after that. In the example I mentioned, it's simply just a patch or add on to the regular calibration and can be flashed without changing the operating system.

Edit: A better way to explain it is the patch allows access to parameters already hard coded in the existing operating system (like the throttle control tables) that were not previously accessible. A custom operating system adds completely new parameters to the system. Hope this helps.

Thanks. And I mean no disrespect to you; but there is a distinct difference.

OP - sorry for the thread hijack.

Ted, can you share where exactly GM says min operating temp is for the LS3 and L99? Maybe post a picture or scan of this reference?

Also, which oil companies, and where do they make the statements you are quoting?

It will be nice to know which oil's (brand and weight) these additives are used in?

So much confusion on who says what, and where, and which applications their sayings apply to....

Where can I find this patch, does it require a 160 T-stat?
