I can only imagine without... not really just for increased HP but for the aural pandemonium from a good set of aggressive aftermarket catbacks.

1. They are heavy
2. They hold water
3. They are only 2.5"
4. Style of a new tip.

While it is true that they do work well, but the weight that is lost going aftermarket and the gains by going to a full 3" out weigh the stock mufflers. Those wanting to keep the car quieter, I would retain the stock ones...

Yep, if I had it to do over again I would have pocketed the 1k in cat back cost until after I get supercharged. At which time I would have gone full 3inch. Now if I decide to get 3inch after the Whipple I will have to spend another 1k. I hate buying parts twice. Other than weight, appearence, and different sound there is no power to gain from a catback under 450rwhp and even then at that point you need a 3inch system to see any gains..

I tend to agree that the stock mufflers do not perform as a "straight thru" muffler. I just done a muffler delete, and I can tell you from experience, my SS FLOWS now. I also agree that claims of 17hp gain is also a bit extravagant...but my butt dyno doesn't lie...there is an increase.

'First thing I said when I picked up my SS (and that was before there were many, if any exhaust options) was "GET THOSE GARBAGE CANS OFF MY CAR!" LOL. Man, those things are fuuuuugly; I don't care how good they flow. 'Not sure how accurate the old scale was in the exhaust shop, but according to the scale, they weighed 18 lbs. each. 'Did a muffler delete and have no regrets, even though I eventually switched to a full exhaust a couple years later. 'Sounded good with the muffler delete; now it's awesome, like music to my ears, with cam & headers/3-inch exhaust!

Your butt dyno must be better calibrated than MULTIPLE dynos.

I don't trust a butt dynos, they have cracks in them.

3 inch or stock, buy once - not many times......

Is there anything that can be done with the stock mufflers besides throwing them out? I have two that are laying around the garage taking up space. They've been cut off for an axleback install.
