Good info!

I know with my Mustang the mufflers were very visible... and I was kind of annoyed when my stainless steel setup started looking rusty! LOL

Yep... And I would agree.. you are not going to see a big power gain... I dynoed my car before and after... no real gain in peak power but some gain in the lower RPM range... Now if we had been able to fit an AeroTurbine muffler in there that might be a different story... An AeroTurbine muffler will actually work better than an straight though design... (i know it sounds like voodoo science but it works! LOL)

The main reason to change the stock muffler is:

1) BETTER SOUND!
2) Weight savings... about 40 pounds
3) perhaps better fuel economy.. no scientific proof... but seems to me at cruising speed mine has gone up...

do you think it'd be possible to attach the AR25 to the existing pipe and have the same effect?

If it's just tubing I don't think it should cost that much! Thanks for all your help. I don't even have my ride and I'm already thinking of mods!

Can you dissect a muffler better than that pic? It looks like there's one or two other chambers not visible there...I want to know what's going on inside it.

With what I see in that pic, there's no reason for it to affect fuel economy. It appears to be a clean pipe with a couple bends and some perforations. It's quite capable of moving huge amounts of exhaust when you're making 300hp, so there's no reason to think it's restricting anything when you're cruising at 40hp on the highway.

Sorry... not cutting up my mufflers.... they are safely stored on the shelf in case I eve need to go back to stock... long shot I know... but...

As for the restriction... I'm not an engineer... but if there are no restrictions then how come the stock exhaust is so incredibly quiet compared to my current setup? I mean the stock exhaust is so muffled compared to my setup, doesn't that mean there has to be some type of restriction going on?

All i know is when I set the cruise at 58 to 60 MPH on the flat road, the car is showing me 33 to 35 MPG... I never seen that before I cut out the mufflers... Could be the phase of the moon for all i know... I'm just amazed I'm seeing those kinds of numbers! LOL!

GM, which has everything to gain by getting better fuel economy from the car, has hoards of the world's best engineers working on this stuff and wants the stock exhaust muffled. You had a guy in a garage trying various aftermarket parts looking for a sound you prefer. You wanted it louder so of course the part you chose is louder.

I just want to know what's inside there that severely restricts a small amount of flow, as found when cruising on the highway, but has almost no measurable effect on high-RPM WOT dyno runs that move many times as much exhaust gas.

Again... no idea... The shop owner is in fact an automotive engineer... He knows how all that stuff works... I'll see what he thinks and have him explain it in terms I can understand and then post it here...
