Switching out the whole pumpkin or going in and replacing the actual gears? From what I'm told, replacing the gears within the pumpkin requires some skills and tools for proper alignment that some driveway mechanics may not possess. I'm not saying you're one of them, but I know I'm not capable.

swapping out pumpkins is not hard, can be done on jack stands with hand tools. I did all the work myself on jack stands, hardest part is getting the car high enough to work comfortably. Swapping the gears I leave to the pro's Though a lot say you don't even need to reshim with a factory 3.91 swap. Not sure if I buy that but a bunch have said it. $1550 is not a bad price for someone doing all the work and calibrating and including parts. I would have pulled it myself and brought it to someone to set up and probably saved $500.

Anyway, it's hot as hell here today. 95 at least. However, she still moved! I had to switch gears in the blink of an eye, especially from 2nd to 3rd, as those RPMs ran towards the redline. I'll play with it more as the weather cools. Sounds quiet with no additional gear noise. Very clean and professional job, as indicated by the photos. For those in the area, see Al or Wayne at Hoselton Chevrolet in Fairport, NY. |

$1550 isn't bad at all. I paid more than that for a dealer to do it on mine back in 2014.

Just priced this 3:91 up grade at my local Ring and Pinion shop (been around forever) it was $850 installed. Ring and Pinion brand is American Axle.

$1598.95 for mine. Keep in mind the GM warranty that comes at this price too.

American Axle & Manufacturing, or AAM is the manufacturer of the GM OEM 1LE 3.91 gear set, so that's a good thing. These are considered the 'drop in' gears that usually install very smoothly.

$850 for labor AND parts, or just the labor and you bring the gears? My ring and pinion alone was $535. Something doesn't add up if that price is everything.

That would be one hell of a deal, but I still think getting that GM warranty is worth the extra cost.

Ok, I've had this upgrade now for several days. All I can say is "Wow!" My heavy convertible now screams. 1st, 2nd and 3rd? Forget about it. Sweet Jesus, they should have made this 3.91 standard in all the SS cars. Yes, you can feel the difference and the smile on my face is real. Thank you Chevy dealership and the top mechanic who installed it.
