Emissions mandate killed the HP. Mid 70's and all 80's were dead pony years. Tech advancement in the EFI era did not really start producing powerful cars again til early 90's. Emissions requirements are tougher now but the techology has passed the emissions hurdle and cars today better the musclecars of the 60's early 70's.
Those who know, 304HP is NOT a lot for 3600 pound car. But it is plenty for most.

A 1980 Camaro definitely DID NOT have 300 HP V8's
I had an 86 IROC Z28 V8 and it only had 190!!

I am very excited about getting my 2LT in a week or two. Yes, I realize it's not a V8. Yes, I know it doesn't have insane power levels and isn't the fastest thing on the road. I don't care - I bought it because it's cool, it's affordable, and it's not a sedan. I owned a little gas-sipping 2007 Civic EX before this - a v6 Camaro will do nicely, thanks.

I own another 6 cylinder that came out when a v8 option was available. That one is a 1956 Plymouth Savoy two door sedan. It's still got the original flathead 6 in it, and it's the slowest car I have owned. I still appreciate it for what it is (and isn't - when was the last time you saw an inline flathead 6?) and have a good time with it. I get great comments whenever I drive it, and no one tells me it sucks because it's only got a six in it.

These v6 Camaro's are what they are. Enjoy the car for what it is, a damn fine feat of engineering. It has unmistakable styling, six forward gears with either trans, 1.4 hp per cu.in. (amazing), great mileage, and is sure to put a smile on your face every time you see it. I think my family and I will enjoy it a great deal.

Want a v8 later? Save and buy one or pick up a used SS in a few years when you can swing it. Don't sweat it in the meantime.

I could care less what people think I was flamed on LS2.com for buying a 2LT/RS and not the V8.

Mine is a daily driver, I have a 2001 Z/28 in the garage (if I need a V8 now), and I am going to purchase the wife a 2SS/RS convertible as soon as the verts are ready

Actually the top hp V8 in 1980 was only 190hp. It was the Z28. So it was way
below the V6 of today's Camaro.

my 87gta only has 215hp with tip. I wish it had 300hp. It would really run then.
It's a lot lighter than my camaro.
