Sold 19’ Camaro SS 1LE with no Oil on dipstick.
So I recently bought my new Camaro from a Ford dealership in my area, and once I got it home I saw the Oil life was at 24%, so I thought I’d be good for a little while until I can get it changed, I wasn’t thinking about looking at the dipstick because the oil life said 24% and I just got it from the dealership, so I thought everything was all good. But a couple of days ago I brought it to an Oil change center and had them change the oil and they told me they saw no oil on the dipstick, the oil life was at 7% so a little low but not past due and to say I was enraged was an understatement. I don’t know what type of dealership would sell someone a car and not check that first, but I just wanted some opinions on what I should do and if I should even worry about it. Do you guys think the car is fine or should I go have it checked out to make sure there’s no damage? The car wasn’t showing any symptoms of being low on oil or any symptoms of damage. But it’s basically new car and I don’t want to have to deal with any problems down the road, literally.

Uhhhhh, a Ford dealer! lol It doesn't have to be much more than 1 and a half to 2 quarts low to not register on the stick. You hold 8 quarts. Apparently it didn't get low enough for your vvt to set trouble codes and turn on the check engine light, so in my professional opinion your fine. If your concerned about oil consumption then check it with each fill up and see if it's using oil. My assumption is the Ford dealer changed it and only put 6 quarts in....and also didn't reset the oil life monitor because they didn't know how. |

I always check my oil, I don't think you have an argument considering how long you had it and drove it until you noticed.

well I've been busy with work and I guess I trusted the Oil Life monitor a little too much. Still you don't sell someone a car without checking that first, that's one of the most basic things, but I should've also checked. and most of the time when you buy a car and the oil life is already that low, they go ahead and do an oil change either before they put it on the lot or once they sell it to you if they have a servicing department which they did.

Any and every kind of dealership would do this, unfortunately. I bought a car 5 years ago, it was low on: oil, brake fluid and antifreeze. Yes, a brand new car. I wasn't too happy.

If you want some piece of mind over it send a sample in for analysis the next time you change your oil.

Several years ago, I was told my oil didn't register on the dip stick by one of those cut rate places (Jiffy Lube) si I asked them to top it off. My next oil change was at the dealership where they told me it was way over full and that I needed to watch that. Apparently the guy at the cut rate station didn't know how to check a dip stick. Or maybe he was looking at the tranny fluid dip stick in error.
That was the last time I took a car to a Jiffy Lube. Not that dealerships are always perfect I guess, but I do think they have a much better track record.

Same here. 4K at most is all either of mine have ever seen. Most of the time it’s less than 1K at the end of the year.
