Stabilitrak Noise

Hello, I recently replaced a wheel bearing on the front passenger side. I also replaced the speed sensor. Then after what I thought was a faulty wheel bearing I replaced the wheel bearing again. The reason I replaced it the second time is at 13 mph there is a clunk which sounds like the stabilitrak is activating. This always happens at 13-14 mph. It will activate several times if I stay at this speed. It even shows stabilitrak active sometimes. I thought it was a faulty speed sensor so I replaced it. I also made sure everything was clean when I reinstalled the bearing and sensor. I'm not sure what else to do. There are no other lights or codes being thrown.

I searched the forums and internet but could not find any issue similar to mine so I joined to post this question. My next step is to take it to the dealer.

Why did you replace it the 1st time? Did you use a GM wheel bearing? Also look carefully if something magnetic dust etc is stuck to the outside of the wheel bearing where the sensor reads. You can buy a small card you hold up next to it to see if all the magnetic segments are working.

The wheel bearing was making a whirring noise like most bad wheel bearings too. I've done quite a few wheel bearings to other cars. This is not a GM part. I don't know anyone that uses OEM parts. Each wheel bearing I've tried to fix the new issue has been a different brand. Haven't tried the card trick but now that it is back in then I won't be able to without pulling it again. Also because it made the stabilitrak noise with two different bearings I think it is a fault is somewhere else. Not really sure. I made sure everything is very clean when I installed the new bearing. Nothing seems to be in the way of the magnet.

Hello. Change tires to reduce noise in cars

Heres the thing Speed, you didn't have the error with the original wheel bearing so there must be some kind of variation the sensor is seeing to set off the stabiltrak. As odd as it sounds try reinstalling the factory part to see if it goes away or try a OEM part. You could take it to someone with the proper scanner to actually see what is going on too.

That is a good point Barb. It wasn't making the noise before the new part. I guess I'm wondering if I have to reset or reprogram the stabilitrak after installing a new wheel speed sensor. One would think it would make a lot more fuss then just happening at 13 mph. Also if I turn off the traction control by hitting the button once it will not activate or make the noise at 13 mph.

I'd count the number of segments and compare them.

I would suspect the new sensor, not the new bearing.

Or the connector to the speed sensor. Check the connectors for damaged or dirty contacts, but also, is the sensor OEM? If there's one place to stay with OEM parts, it's electronics.

Good point, I missed he changed the sensor. Could definitely be it.

Yes! I took it to a dealer and they found a chunk of rust had attached itself to the back of the wheel bearing where the speed sensor is. Apparently this messed up the reading on the sensor. You would think this was random but I left with it fixed and it happened again! They cleaned it again and I never had the issue again.
