AFM Delete L99
Hello, I am preparing to begin the process of swapping my LT Camaro to an SS. I know it doesn't make much sense, "why not buy a SS?" My 2010 LT was my first car and unfortunately doesn't run anymore. I'd much rather give new life to it than buy a replacement. That being said, I will be dropping an L99 automatic into the car. I'd like to disable to AFM to prevent the car from swapping over to 4 cylinders. From everything I've read here and throughout the internet, it seems like this can be done without physical modifications to the engine via tuning. Is this correct? And if I'm not worried about making more power than stock, do I need to bother with VVT or can I tune out AFM and leave VVT as is? I'm trying to avoid as much mechanical modification as possible. Any advice for this noobie over here is appreciated. Thank you!

If all you want is afm turned off any tuner can easily do that but are you putting in a 6l80e with it? Transmission is totally different between the v6 and v8 so I assume a trans tune will be needed as well.
Not sure on power limit of v6 transmissions either. You can check on the v6 forum. Several members over the years have done the conversion. Check in the search box. Ted jennatty, dyno Steve and gpi are all sources for good tunes online and they can help you with up loading but if all you want is a stock tune I assume the transmission tuning is the most important if your transmission can handle it. |

Personally if it was me and you figured out all the emissions stuff and didn't want to crack the engine and spend as little as possible I would just tune the stock L99 and trans if you got the 6l80e as well and turn off adm and leave vvt alone. Vvt is a good thing mostly. Just my 2 cents.
The difference between a stock L99 camaro ss and just one with a tune is pretty amazing even if everything else is stock. Changes the whole responsiveness of the motor and transmission. |

Are you swapping in the ECM from the v8?
This is never as simple as people hope it will be. |

Yes, I am picking up a copart donor car and swapping everything over, powertrain, ecu, accompanying harnesses and mounts, etc.

Jewld is correct. I you turn off afm usually the afm lifters aren't a problem. I have seen L99s with 150k that have never had lifter problems, and then I have seen some with lifter problems after 40k. Luck of the draw. But just tuning it out is what you need to do. If you do remove the afm liters, that is a plus, but if you don't want to spend the extra coin, there is no reason it won't go 100k plus on the motor.
I guess that is my next question. How many miles are on the L99 donor going in? |

If it were me and the motor was out of the car I would go ahead and replace them, it'll be easier and you will have a piece of mind.

Thanks, this is my line of thought as well. Any idea what replacement parts I would need after removing it?

GPI and many others will have most likely have complete kits, we have a fleet of hemis where I work and we loose lifters at anywhere from 40k and up. The L99 cars are known to have issues as well. It's definitely worth the time and for minimal cost before they go. Once they go you are now replacing the cam and it depends on how bad if you are dropping pan to clean the metal shavings/dust. Buying a used engine you have no idea idle hrs or how it was taken care of. Do yourself a favor and replace the lifters.
