Electric power steering pump conversion DIY
I have a car that was factory hydraulic power steering and after going to the turbo setup and gearing it more towards drag racing I went with a manual foxbody rack and that was okay but the steering was absolutely awful, even moving. So I decided to go back to power steering my only issue was there was no room on the bay for a belt driven pump
This is a remote mounted volvo electric power steering pump. I like that I can have the car off to steer and its 100% better than the manual rack. Can turn the car stationary with one hand again. Cost of pump, harness, and lines, around $400. Here is the part list- Mid 2000s volvo s40 electric power steering pump 20 feet of ptfe hose, i used fragola part number 602006 Jegs brand 6an pushlock hose, 20 feet, part number 102013 (1) 18mmx1.5 to 6an adapter for rack, jegs brand, part number 100706 (2] 16mmx1.5 to 6an adapter, one for rack, one for volvo pump, Russell part number 648060 (1) 6an pushlock fitting for return line on rack. Jegs brand. Part number 110071 (1) jegs brand 80 amp breaker, doubles as relay/fuse. Part number 10567 (1) fragola 6an 90 degree fitting, part number 609006 (1) fragola 6an straight fitting, part number 600106. Wiring is a simple 3 wire hookup, 8 gauge power and ground directly to battery. Breaker in between battery and pump positive wire. Other plug has a 3 wire connector, 2 of the 3 are for canbus and are not needed, the third goes to switched 12v and thats it. Be patient bleeding the pump, it takes a while if you remote mount like i did. THERE IS A 3 SECOND DELAY IN THE PUMP... don't be alarmed when it doesn't turn on right away If you have any questions, feel free to ask em

Another option is an electric power rack. 2013 and later Camaro SS stock set up. Parts should be plentiful.

I'm pretty sure they need feedback from the bcm which I do not have. My car is 100% gutted and have not seen a person successfully swap to the electric rack yet

Curious how the PS system is holding up, 5 yrs later.
Did it trigger a CEL? Would be something I'd have to contend with for my state inspections. |

I ended up getting rid of the car about 18 months ago but not a single issue, ever with the eps system. 10/10 would recommend
