I have to agree with PQ, when your cruising at highway speed you can gear down and it has lots of haul a$$. Its 0-60 is nothing to sneeze at either.

First of all, quoting 0-60 times isn't really a good performance indicator. That 0-60 reference was devised decades ago, when cars were pathetically slow. For modern cars, 0-100 mph would be more accurate to use. 0-60 has a lot to do with traction, and most newer performance cars make plenty of power to blister the tires.
Camaro feels a bit heavy from a stop, because it is. Like others said, from a highway roll they move very well. Also, the aftermarket is strong, if you have enough funds you can build a 1,000 hp Camaro to satisfy your desires. As for comparing it to other fast cars like a Z06 or Viper, it doesn't compare. Two different categories of cars. Tony

This car 'feels' like a muscle car. It's got a nice weight to it, but you can do all kinds of things to make it perform better. It will never 'feel' like a euro sportster or like a supercar.

This is why the performance aftermarket exist. The thrill loses it's edge over time and you need more. I have a buddy with a 900+ rwhp 4th gen. Camaro and he recently said he was getting bored if you can imagine that.

Plan A: Get an SS now, get the itch for more speed in a couple years, upgrade to a Z28.
Plan B: Get a Z28 as soon as it's out, still get the itch for more speed in a couple of years anyway, make the jump to a corvette Z06. I don't think you'll ever have a permanent solution. You'll need to get faster every couple of years until you're so old the speed scares you. At least it'll be easier on your wallet if you go to the SS now and delay the jump to over-$50k cars by a few more years.

A lot of people recommend just modding the car, and I'd be willing to do the CAI, headers and cat-back but I'd be unwilling to do the supercharger because of insurance. Hence the Z/28 route if it does come out.
Since so many have suggested the supercharger/turbo route - what do you guys do for insurance? Don't tell them? Get specialized insurance (one person gave me a link to a company that does specialized insurance)? I emailed a performance shop in my city and he said that some people just don't tell the insurance company. I mean it's not that difficult for anyone to see a supercharger under there - do assessors just ignore that?

No ifs, and's or but's about it, the SS is a very fast car. Comparing it to my 09 Vette, they both get there, but the Vette gets there quicker. I would have to say the biggest difference is from 70mph up where the Vette's lighter wieght and superior areodynamics make a bigger difference. The Vette's NPP(butterfly) exhaust gives you the sound of speed and the car is more...violent in its accelaration. Both cars are faster than any sane human needs them to be, but they are so much fun.
I am getting older and just enjoy cruising now more with the occasional burst of speed here and there, but I cannot say that I am bored with either car. They are a blast.

My AC Cobra replica, single turbo, gets to 60 in around 3.5 sec., and does the quarter mile in less than 11 - 1/2 seconds. That's pretty quick for a street driven car. Raw acceleration, and not too many cars can touch it on the street.
Now, my SS is roughly in line with my 86 Grand National, same general feeling, but less notchy (no turbo). Same relative stats between the two cars, although the GN is automatic, the SS is 6 speed. Actually more fun to go thru the gears manually, but faster with the automatic - at least by adding a turbo to the mix. Still a thrill either way.
