personal plan is to buy my boy/s a used POS with potential when they hit 14, they won't get to drive it until 16, during those years, they'll learn maintenance and the cost of repairs (money coming from their summer jobs, etc....not me) and I'm hoping fear of blowing whatever cash they invested into it in a wreck or loosing the car from tickets will keep their heads out of their asses, maybe it works, maybe it don't

I say start him out in say an early 4th gen Camaro or Firebird and tell him to take care of it for a year or 2 with no problems. Then when your confident he can respect this car and not be swayed by pressuring teens. Take him out to the dealer and let him order the car of his dreams!

It'd be a great car to get from the 16 year olds point of view.
You cant baby him forever. It really dosent matter what you get him, he will still probably wreck it like most peoples first car. The LS is limited at 110mph BTW, any other V6 will do that. You'd have to get a little 4 cylender engine car to keep him under that. |

okay this is coming from a 16 year old i own a 2010 camaro 2LT/RS i love the car and i am thankful my parents got it for me i did well in school and im responsible and help around the house thats why i got the car. Now i know as a parent it is scary to know your 16 year old kid is driving around with 304 HP under the hood. But this all boils down to the fact if you trust your kid. But even with the most trust we are 16 and we will make a stupid decision every now and then but i treat this car as if it was my baby if it were to ever get in a crash my parents would take the car from me and i know that if i were to get a speeding ticket i would get the car and my license taken away. As of right now i don't have my license and i drive the car with my parents but they see that i know what i am doing to a point and trust that i will not make the stupid decision. Hope all goes well for your son

I'm 17 (turning 18 in 3 weeks). Last June I bought a 1LT/RS. My first car was a 06 Impala LT. I pay for everything associated with my car (payment $543/month, insurance $1100/6 months, and gas ~$40/2 weeks) I'm a senior in high school and I work between 35 and 40 hours a week. I'll admit that I don't have very much money left over after I pay for my car. I would say if he has to work like I do to pay for his car I'm all for him getting it. It really teaches you a lot of responsibility having to pay for your dream car. I love this car to death and wouldn't trade it for anything. However if you're just going to hand him the keys and say "have fun" I would never let him have it. If he works for it he will respect it, if he doesn't, then he probably won't. I know of a kid in my school that his dad gave him a early 2000s Mustang GT for his 16th birthday it had a lot of stuff done to it and it had about 400-500 hp. Last summer he totaled it. Ran off the road into a pole or something. That's what will happen if you just hand it to him. I actually have tons of respect for my car's power because I put a lot of hard work into paying for it. It makes me really sick when I see people that just give their kids a new Camaro. I'm working my ass off for this car and there's just too many spoiled kids out there that get these cars and don't appreciate them. Sure there's people out there that say if somebody gave it to me I'd take it. Maybe, maybe not. If somebody offered to pay off my car right now, I wouldn't take their offer. 5 years from now when it's paid off I want to be able to get into MY Camaro and turn the key and be able to say the it is all MINE because of my hard work and dedication. If that is your son is going to earn his Camaro by working and not just good grades/staying out of trouble, then I'm all for him getting it. If not then no, he doesn't deserve it at all.

If you really don't trust him GPS tracker or if you can't watch the computer screen the whole time he is gone use This would work well. But as a younger person (24) who was given a IH Scout II at 16 my parents trusted me to behave myself I knew exactly what the limits were and the consequences for breaking those limits and I knew that didn't care what kind of excuse I could come up with the limits were the limits. It comes down to trust, I don't know you or your son, but if you trust him and he has earned it get him the car but make sure he knows the rules and you won't move on them. If he is trustworthy he will make the right decisions.

Not sure tuning would do much...60 miles per hour is not fast enough for a freeway but it's WAY too fast for a residential road.
Check into monitors and educate him. http://www.tattleteen.com/products/enfora_modem http://www.edmunds.com/ownership/aud...6/article.html http://www.carchip.com/Products/8226.asp http://www.youthdrivingsafe.org/index.php I had an Escort GT with maybe 90 some odd horsepower...I totaled it. My buddy had a Mustang GT with 225 hp...he didn't. A 300 hp V6 is a powerful car...and I'm not sure I'll put my sons in one. If I do...you can bet I'll be monitoring the crap out of em.

to be completley honest with you if a v6 is still too fast then i wouldnt go to a camaro for a first car, im 18 and started out with a 67 chevy with a 350 and when i got used to the power from that i got a 93 z28, i guess what im trying to say is get him a different car to start then when you think he has matured more is is ready and more responsible to handle a camaro...get him an SS, or hell even a Z28 if its out by then

If his first car is going to be a 2010 Camaro, you might as well but a steering wheel on a casket..........if he is a responsible 16 year old he would wait a few years..my 16 yr old, 2 accidents, one near miss, reason: not paying attention, too cool to pay attention, radio too load, he's responsible, but not a Camaro for his first car. He drivers the old 1999 4X4, he is 18 now

my first car was a 90 rs camaro. but i was lucky if i could get it to do a burn out. power was not there. i agree that you should get him a 4 gen v6. and a 5gen for graduation.
