Emissions Sticker - $27

Some of you are probably already aware of my car being hit by an SUV. The estimate was done last week, and one of the funny things I found out is that there is a sticker on the underside of the hood for emissions.

Yes, it's a $27 part. For a sticker.

They have to replace the hood, AND the sticker.

I just find that amusing.

I need amusing right now because I miss my car...

that's funny. So is it some sort of nationwide emissions tax sticker? I know around here you have to buy state and local vehicle registration stickers. I'm guessing the price is high because most of the cost goes to some governing body...

No tax, no governing body.... just rediculous part pricing. The label is mandated to be there. But it's just a stupid printed label. Anything over a buck is highway robbery. Price out a little tube of touch up paint and you'll get the same sticker shock.

I went to get a touch up paint bottle for one of my trucks. $18 at the dealer, $6 at Autozone. Same supplier. I went with the $6.

Same truck, needed a rear diff cover gasket. $27 at a dealer. $10 at Autozone. Just a simple rubber gasket.

Gee I wonder why the aftermarket does so well?

It's probably one of those warning stickers. Or like one of the ones that shows how the belts are routed.

I got my touch up paint from Classic Chevy for $12.95. Still local parts store is probably cheaper but I wanted to make sure to get the right color.

I covered up my "Airbag Warning" messages on my sun visors with vinyl. I heard that if you are in a wreck and the sunvisors have to be replaced that it is mandatory for the paintshop to put the stickers back on.

Do not remove he sticker under penalty of law.

Just like a matress.

A hair dryer and some spray adhesive can be your best friend.

I know....sounds stupid.

I was covering mine up because I didn't want to take the chance to screw up my sun visors trying to take them off. Plus, it didn't cost me any extra. The vinyl guy just threw it in with the deal on my stripes.

During the early 90s I wanted to replace the weatherstripping around the front side windows on my poor ol' 79 Cutlass. The Olds dealer quoted $1200 just for the upper sections where the windows rest. ("So... you're saying my car is totalled?") I wound up getting a kit for windows, doors & trunk from an aftermarket company I found in the back of a car magazine for $35. I opened the box and all of the pieces were in clear wrappers with blue logos from some company called "General Motors." I sure was glad I didn't buy direct!

Being that insurance is paying for it, I'm don't mind them replacing it.

I just found it funny that it's that expensive.

I'm not finding it funny that my estimate was $11,000 to repair the left front end of my car though. Still not happy about the whole accident thing ;p

wow!, I remember seeing the pics, never would have thought it would be that expensive. Thank goodness for insurance.

Collision repairs are criminally over priced. A fender bender to a body shop is like fresh kill to vultures. A repair that could probably be done profitably for 5 grand can easily be written up well beyond twice that by a greedy estimator with a dull pencil. Oh my god, there is so much frame damage... thousands and thousands in frame damage.... reality, couple hours on the frame rack, hang some parts, paint it. Ka-ching goes the massive profits, and our insurance rates.

Just so you know, there was no frame damage on my car. Essentially, hood, front body work and harness', left front fender and harness', front Ground Effects, Left Side Ground effects, left front suspension, sway bar, left tire & wheel, and the windshield wiper reservoir.

Frame damage might have meant a total.

Most of the estimate was for cost of parts.
