CAI in the SW US area

Ive heard from a couple people here in Las Vegas that it is not a good idea to purchase a CAI here in Las Vegas. One person being a Toyota certified mechanic. He said that the fuel here is different and has some kind of additive and I don't remember what it was. He also said that I would see initial gains but after a short time I would actually see a loss. Something to do with the intake pulling more air than the engine needs. Has anyone else heard anything like this? And even if that were the case couldn't a tune take care of it?

A fuel additive is not gonna have any effect as to a cold air intake. The car's computer is more than capable for adjusting for a cold air intake, however, it would always be better to get it tuned so you are getting the most from it. You are not gonna lose power
unless the more air you are sucking in is heatsoaked, which would be the case with an intake system that has no heat shield or is leaking. I had a intake system on my 06 GTO with no heat shield, and I could actually feel the power loss. It was terrible.

Now say if the fuel was of a lower quality than back east, would I be able to just put in e85 and be good to go? Or would I most likely need to remap the ecu for that also? I apologize for being naive, Im just trying to gain a better understanding, and thank for the reply, it did clear it up some.

These cars are not meant to run on E85, at least I am not aware that they are. Non flex-fuel vehicles don't have the sensors necessary to detect ethanol content. They also don't have the control software to manage the air fuel mixture properly. So your car might run on E85, it just may not run well. It could also cause major damage and using E85 might void your warranty.
