Question Auto-Dim rearview mirror....Is it just me?

I've never been a fan of the auto-dim rearview mirrors. They just don't get dark enough & to me any car behind me seems to be blinding.

So I call my dealer & ask him to check into how much the standard flip-type mirror is (like I had in my 1LT) & how much to install it knowing they need to connect the OnStar buttons.

He calls me back & told me his service manager told him it was "Not Recommended" & it would be a trial & error process because they had never done this. He never even gave me a price for the standard mirror!!

Trial & error! Not Recommended! It's a freaking mirror! How hard can it be? I'm pretty close to finding another dealer, (this same service manager also told me ANY mods voids my warranty).

Thoughts?

I can recomend getting a SmartMirror with builtin GPS and backup cam.

I replaced my stock mirror and now I don't have auto dimming inside or ouside. Swaping out that mirror is a two minute job. Yes you need to find a better dealer.

Do you adjust your side mirror so you can see the side of your car? When I used to do that, I got blinded. Now I have my mirrors adjusted out so I see the other lane and not the side of my car. This way I can see cars in that infamous blind spot on both sides, and I don't get so blinded by the light that does reflect in. The interior rvm doesn't trouble me at all with lights too bright.
You could also apply a light tint to your rvm inside meybe?
I am very happy with them. I have astigmatism and my eyes are really sensitive to "light bloom" at night so I feel your pain.

how about .. some window tint! done and done, and you get to keep the better mirror.

I also have astigmatism, but haven't noticed "light bloom". I have noticed as I have gotten older a lack of contrast at night (I'm now 48).

I thought about tinting the windows & may do that anyway. As far as keeping the "better mirror" I don't see the auto-dim as a better mirror, just fancier.

I have been adjusting the mirrors out to show me the blind spot (especially when on the freeway), but light from the side mirrors is not the issue, it's only from the RVM.

if you are not an OnStar fan you can just pull the plug on the back of the rvm and it won't autodim.

The Gentex mirror is a great innovation. Not fancier, better!!!
Notice that your driver's side mirror also dims and is connected to the light sensor in the rearview mirror. Like you said in your post, "It's a freaking mirror!" If you don't like the glare from the rear, adjust it so it doesn't work at all!

I hate the driver side auto-dim, which I wouldn't mind deactivating. I rather get a true view on my left blind spot.

I've got the standard 1LT flip mirror and I haven't needed to flip it once since I put 20% tint on the rear window. That was well over a year ago...

I think the mirrors are the best I have ever had. They work great with my 54 year old eyes.

The only mirror related request I have is that I loved that my CTS would tilt the drivers side mirror down toward the ground when I shifted to reverse. I miss that.
