Good Day Mate!

I read the cost to convert the Camaro to Australian standard is steep. Have you checked into that? Some cars, by state, "need" to be converted to right hand drive. my2

Not totally true about the hood ornaments, although that has become a sort of urban legend over the years. Here's a quote from the site I posted before about it:

For the 1968 model year, the chromed hood trim for SS396 changed from the simulated finned cooler to a set of simulated carburetor velocity stacks. The early 1968 model year SS350 continued to receive the 1967-style finned hood trim, but the SS350 trim transitioned to the velocity stack trim as the year progressed. The simulated velocity stack continued for the 1969 model year with all SS cars using this same hood trim. Related to this, the part number for the 1968-69 hood is different than 1967, with the only noticeable difference being the drains used with the velocity stack trim.

Unfortunately, there's no date for when the changeover occurred for the 350 cars. Sounds like they just used up the finned ones that they had on the 350 cars.

The axle would be a 12 bolt on any '68 SS. It also would be a 12 bolt if it were a 327 4 bbl with a 4 speed.

Thanks, I was probably thinking of the 67 model year. Is your dad's a big block? 68 is my favorite year, just wish they had all the trim tag info like the 67 to help buyers out a bit. It sucks that there's at least one company out there reproducing trim tags for the first gens, I'm sure that people get taken for a ride here and there.

Actually, it's not a real RS or SS. It was 327 2 bbl/powerglide car from the factory. It was Rallye Green, however, and to my knowledge, it had the stripe on it originally. At some point the owner had put the SS hood on and blacked out the tailpan, which would have gone well with the lift shackles and air shocks that were on the car.

When we got it, it was pretty rough it had a correct coded 327, but it was made about a month after the car, which didn't matter as we had bought the car to modify. There is little left under the skin that is factory. It has an LS7 and a T56 in it now. In the front, it has C5 Corvette suspension, and in the back it has a 9" with a DSE 4-link. Coilovers all around, and C6 Z06 brakes all around. We blacked out the tailpan because we figured it had big block cubes. It made 503/475 the last time it was on the dyno, IIRC. It's really fast.

Yeah, anymore, without paperwork, it's tough to really know for sure what's going on with a car. With the repop bodies that are out there now, I'm sure there's plenty of VIN swapping going on. The most rusted hunks of junk are worth something now just because of the title. If it didn't look so bad, I'll bet people would just sell the title and VIN plate if they could.

My Dad and I both like '68's the best. That's why when we were looking for a car we knew it had to be a '68. For us, we didn't want an SS or even an RS, since we were going to tear it up, anyway. Finding a car with no documentation is a lot easier than the other way. Although, as it turns out we know the history of this car back to new. My Dad is the 4th owner. The first 2 were in one family and had the car until '04. The next guy had it for only a few months. My Dad has had it for almost 6 years now.

Did you ever consider one of these? I met a guy a couple of months ago that had one shipped here from down under and he even modded an old blower so that it would turn on and off by hitting a button from inside the car. He hollowed out a real blower and stuck a AC clutch on it, sounds great.
