Dealer undercoating...
When I bought my camaro I was planning on having as a winter car. Ended up getting a good deal on a plow truck so I stored it. I have asked my dealer about either getting my money back or using the 450 bucks towards gm accesories or something. They are insisting my car will still rust quickly unless I get it undercoated. I know this isn't true. The guy is pretty much refusing to refund the money one way or another and wants to undercoat my car. Im waiting for a call back from another guy at the dealer. Am I obligated to get the undercoating or should they give me my money if they didn't do the work??

If they havent under coated the car yet they are obligated to give you a refund. Unless when you bought it you were told no refunds.

Well once you signed the sales agreement and if it includes the undercoating you are obligated to buy it. This is usually a big money maker for them so this is why they may be taking a hard stance. I can't believe that the dealer would do this though. They usually are looking for the next sale so why tick off a potential repeat customer ???

first off I would just hate to have that crap all over the underside of your Camaro. Suspension parts and mods would become a real pain in the a$$
Typically that is done at the finance guys desk along with extended warranty so i would assume you dont have it on the actual deal until you close your deal. If you have closed your deal and they have given you a I OWE statement to perform the undercoating then read the terms on that statement. If you have financed the undercoating then it would be difficult for them to just give you back cash as it has become part of the security interest. If you paid cash for the undercoating then they should be able to refund cash.

The undercoating was financed. But my 5k down payment is listed on there as well. Couldn't they take it out of my down payment?? Im not asking for cash back although that would be preffered. I even told the guy I would buy gm accesories with it to keep the money at the dealership. They don't make a ton on camaro undercoatings because they do it can by can by hand. I saw them doing it to another one. They used 2 cases. I wont be buying another car from this place anyway and I think they know it. So they aren't as worried about a repeat customer as much as they usually would be.

Undercoating is just another way for the dealer to make money. Canceling this is like chopping another $400 off the sales price or reducing the salesman's commission by $300 or so.

I could care less. They gave me 12k for my trade in and sold it for 17k while we where signing paperwork for it. So 450 bucks wont hurt them. Besides the fact I have sent them 3 customers. Shouldn't have but did because they had cars in stock my friends wanted. |

So wait a second. I live in the north east and will be ordering my " daily driver" camaro soon. Should I not get the dealer undercoating?

Up to you. I was gonna because I planned on winter duty. Plans changed. I didn't want it to begin with but I knew it would protect the car from salt.

If you ever plan on doing any exhaust, suspension, headers, or mid pipes mods you're going to have some issues after that undercoat.

Undercoat is just a gimick to make them money, one of the oldest there is. It provides little real protection from rock salt bouncing around at 65 miles an hour. Get your money back and walk out.

Back in the day, when I wrote service for a Chevy dealer, rustproofing and undercoating had a very large profit margin.
Dealer paid an 8.00 an hour guy to spray 25.00 worth of undercoating and charged whatever he could get for it. Sometimes the salesman would throw in undercoating/rustproofing for "free" to entice a person to buy a car.In reality the 400.00 job cost the dealer 40.00. I wouldn't have it done to my car. It's a mess when you work on the car. Also the factory corrosion warranty is pretty good. |
