Good Job! Once you hit your goal, I would work some good carbs in and just focus on healthy eating!

This week has been a tough one for me. I struggled through my workouts all week long. Maybe I caught a bit of a bug on the plane last weekend or something. I've had a bit of a cough all week and feel like complete ass.

It's either that or the diet is finally catching up to me. I was a bit crampy this morning doing triceps. I'll have a good carb meal this weekend and see how I feel Monday.

It could be either one, you'll know soon enough. If it is the low carbs this is what I would do. I only go low carb 4 days max. On my high carb days I would add my carbs, something like oatmeal and some fruit in meal 1 or 2. Then for me meal 4 (post workout) a good portion of prorein source, and a high glycemic carb, this is the only time I would recomend white rice or baked white potato. If you're going to eat higher carbs for a day eat them where they do the most good, around your workouts. Like this you can keep cycling carbs without the side affects and up your workout nutrition and metabolism at the same time.

There are many side affects of low carb diets. Low energy levels, decline in strength, glycogen levels are depleated, muscles flatten out, metabolism slows down and it triggers cravings. After eating low carbs for a while when you start again, and you will, you tend to imediately store it is fat.

So what is the point of a low carb diet? If someone can get within their calorie range without dropping carbs what is the point?

I had a body building judge write me a low carb diet a couple years ago.

Here's how it works......

You increase protein and healthy fats and remove carbs. After about two weeks your body will actually start to burn fat for fuel. Then you drop the amount of healthy fats your eating by just a little bit. This forces the body to use fat stores for fuel.

I did it for about 6 weeks and dropped down to 7.8% body fat. However like CFD said my muscles did look a bit deflated.....not nice and thick like a lifter but thin like a runner. I didn't like it. My 6 pack was kickin' though.

This method is pretty fast at cutting body fat. I think pro body builders use it for about 4 weeks before a contest, then the final week before a contest they eat lots of carbs to blow their muscles back up.

I think that last statement is right, but don't quote me on that. I've never had the guts to compete and don't have the genetics to do good anyway.

You got it right, but they carb up the day before, not a full week before, they also drink a couple gallons of water everday about two weeks before competition, then cut there water down to almost nothing the day before they compete, but I learned you need potassium the day you compete, because you'll get major muscle cramps! Happened to me, so I really learned my lesson on that!

There are two things I'm aware of, one is dropping all starchy carbs pre contest then 1-2 days before eating starcxhy carbs to fill out the muscles. When muscles are deproved of glycogen they flatten out, when it is re-introduced the muscle soak it up like a sponge and they fill out. They also prctice something that I only now a little about it's called switching salts I believe. They cut all salts for a couple of weeks and then consume them right before contest. I believe it bulks up the muscles but I don't recall the reason why, I have a paper on it somehere when I have time I will try to find it just for general info because I have forgotten

Yeah, the salt is usually avoided, but I've also been told not to deplete your body from salt because you will blow up like a balloon once you have it.......maybe thats just for women though.....not sure, I just try to keep my salt low and not go crazy before I compete!
