I meant microfiber that stuff works great. No love for the turtle wax, huh? I'm not a huge fan overall but it puts a great shine on black cars for about a week. It also hides scratches well to but thats not what this tread is about.

My friend was telling me about some kind of wax that works great for black cars, but I can't remember what it's called. He said the wax itself is black too so it's great even for small rock chips, etc.

Then in another thread I read that someone will put a few cap fulls of a liquid car wax in to his wash buckets to get a cheap application during the wash. I doubt it would last long if it worked at all, but then again, if you're doing it every wash, you don't need it to last longer than that (week tops).

This may be a stupid question but can someone please explain to me the difference between wax, polish and rubbing compound.

Wax is used to protect paint, or better yet to protect the shine that you get from polishing paint. A polish or rubbing compound is used to remove imperfections in paint. They come in different "cuts" or strengths, and are used to cut the clear coat or paint down to a level where there is no damage. Think of a polish or rubbing compound like liquid sandpaper. Think of wax as a liquid clear coat.

Getting a good foam gun will do an amazing job minimize swirl marks!

Okay, so I washed my black car over the weekend and it came out with some nice swirl marks on the doors and I couldn't help but to think about this post. I was about to go to a local show so they had to go! I broke out my Turtle was black wax kit. The kit I was talking about earlier. It comes with a wax, a polish, and a spray detailer. I was in a hurry so I broke out the spray. Knocked out the whole car in less then 10 minutes! Streak/Swirl free! Worked perfect, so you can knock Turtle Wax all you want but that spray detailer worked great. Again, the wax and polish combo look great as well but it seems to fade quick after a couple washes.....You be the judge.

The reason that it seems to fade quick after a few washes is because the stuff is full of fillers. You are not getting rid of swirls marks, you're just filling them in. You may as well be using black shoe polish on your car. It will do the same thing, only cheaper.

I can't speak of the Mothers back to black kit. Haven't seen it before. But, the Turtle Wax kit has a cleaner wax and a polish. Both are a black liquid (use gloves) and the detailer isn't the usual white liquid like a lot of the spray detailers are. Pretty sure it's clear but it could be black to. Never sprayed it on anything but a black car. The kit is called Turtle Wax "Black Box". Pretty sure you can find a couple jokes in there.

Stieger,
I've used the black box from Turtle wax once... doesn't do what I wanted... when I get to go to my father's place I'm doing a full Adam's/Zaino detail (Adams outside/Zaino inside/Adams glass)

Have you used shoe polish before? I hadn't thought about that, but actually doesn't sound terrible. I know a couple of those turtle wax kits come with like a black lipstick thing which HAS to be the exact same thing. So crazy it just might work. Being former Army, you know I've got that laying around already too haha.

Yeah the kit I was thinking of before is Mother's kit. Haven't tried it yet. Have you used it?

Nope. I'm not big on OTC stuff. You can find a gem or two every once in a while (the Mother's Powerball for exhaust tips for example), but for the most part, quite a bit of that OTC stuff is cheaply made in China junk and the quality of it leaves a lot to be desired.

I'd be scared to use shoe polish on my paint because as soon as I get dressed up, I would rub up against the car and get shoe polish on one of my suits. That would suck. If you're going to use Black Ice, you may as well use shoe polish because it's cheaper. Hell, a jar of Kiwi probably goes a long way.

I take my bucket, wash mit, meg car wash and towls with me to the hand car wash. I give them extra 5 bucks to use my gear to wash and dry. I also tip them. Even hand washing yourself you will get some light swirling... Ohhhh I also spray adams detail spray over the car while it is wet, before they dry it. I'm sure you could work out the same. One thing about car wash folks.. they will do anything you ask for a buck.
