everyone knows that most times during rear end accidents, the fault lies with the person in the back. But because I absolutely hate blacked out lights, I have asked police officers what the laws are. Once you black out the lens, regardless of where you live, it becomes a liability. He stated that if you are rear ended, and you have blacked out lenses, you will usually be at fault...day or night. He did say that it is not cut and dry, that all accidents have their own factors, but you would be running a huge risk.
I try not to be "one of those people" but my neighbors 16 year old son blacked out the lenses on his 1500, and one day while following him at night, I could barely see his brake lights. I spoke with his parents (for safety sake only) and the next day he had new lenses. In my defense, he took the lenses off and sprayed black rattle can paint on them. Crazy.... |

Also, here in Alaska, the police use blacked out lenses, and tint as a reason to pull people over while trolling clubs after closing.....just a thought...

It does give a person some ammo if they were to run into you though.
Hopefully that never happens.

When we started selling our product I showed them to several local police officers from different cities. They all said the same thing, as long as they are visible from 1000 feet when the brakes come on & at night they are ok. Our Gun Smoke (12%) a little bit darker than some OEM tail lights & our Tint (6%) is actually lighter than some OEM tail lights. It is a much better solution than spraying with paint because if the laws change it can be removed with no damage. For customers that want something darker than OEM the Charcoal(30%) and Smoke(17%) are darker, but since they are transparent they don't effect the 1000 foot rule. The material also still allows the lens to be reflective when the lights are off.
Some areas & other states have a law that says you are not allowed to modify or change anything about your headlights or tail lights, so in those areas you could get a ticket for anything darker than the Tint (6% material). Since it's difficult to know exactly how it will look and effect your driving, we offer a 30 day return period on our headlight/tail light tint. If you feel your safety is at risk, peel them off and return them. We will refund everything except the shipping with 30 days from the day of purchase. |

They are illegal also the aac sidemarkers are also illegal. I have the side markers but I will not black out my tail lights. The reason given to me was that if your car stalls and looses power at night you need the reflectors so others can see you. That came from the po po, who is a friend of mine.

I'm usually the only one in my car. When I hit the brakes you can't even tell my lights are blacked out, so....... I don't see why my blackouts make me unsafe.

Had mine done for almost two years. No issues yet but I had my painter paint them with smoked candy. Better the auto zone paint/stick on tint. Also left my third break light red for the idiots behind me.

Even the safest driver can't compensate for lack of ability to see tail lights being illuminated. It's those exact reasons that there are laws governing how much light must be visible from different distances. It's not just for your safety but for the safety of everyone on the road with you. /off soapbox |

Mine are done with Headlight Armor.
I have no issues, and the officer who stopped me for speeding last week didn't have any problem seeing the brake lights, or running lights at night.
