it's been a back-&-forth between the two for top dog. at times one, or both, were not even offered. the 2nd gen & 3rd gen had no SS. 75-76 and 88-90 had no z28. the 1st gen SS was faster & more powerful, but the Z28 was designed for road racing & would kill the SS in the turns. i feel that if they make a Z28 soon, it will be the more powerful & better-handling car.

ps - this has been discussed a few times in this thread

How hard just to give us what we want... z-28?

I know GM is low on the money but seriously how hard would it be to give us some sort of z28? WHy can't they stick an LS7 or ls376 480 or LSA in an SS, give it stiffer suspension and call it z28. Even with only a better engine i'd be content if they called it z28. Its better than nothing at all and better than ss!

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ My bet is that it will be saved for a midcycle refresh. Might also have to wait for the next administration.

Ha, you can't even imagine the amount of resources required in inserting a new powertrain in a vehicle.

GM isn't exactly flush with cash right now...the additional development and testing would cost millions.

WTF just to stick a different engine in? How hard could that be. I don't care if its tested well. What if it was just a special order option of having a different engine? come on man. I'd pay a little extra for an LS7 instead of having to buy it seperately.

Verrrrryyyyyyyy hard. Right now your odds are better to win the lotto, go buy either a 7.0 L Z06 motor or a CTS-V Supercharged motor and make your own.

Heyyyyyy, I just got an idea. Who wants to invest in 7.0L V8s engines from GM Parts Division??

I believe someone from GM was quoted as saying bringing the z28 to market would add an additional $50 million to the Camaro development costs. They'd have to sell 10,000 of them with a markup of $5000 over the SS, just to recoup their costs, let alone make a profit.

Not to mention the social dilemma involved with bringing a non-hybrid, gas-guzzling tax required sports car to the market when society seems to be demanding just the opposite - and at this point is paying money towards it in the form of gov't loans.

wtf? it can't be that hard. They can't just deliver a special camaro with no engine but everything else for hardcore enthusiasts and then let them buy and have a crate engine of their choice installed?

You can....GM performance parts offers many different engines. Buy one have it installed and hang on to the ls3 or sell it. Keep in mind the ls7 is not a cheap engine but you can sure pump out some HP. And your SS would be a sleeper....who would expect the additional 200 HP under the hood. If a Z28 was available everyone would know what you had under the hood. There are a lot of mod sites showing what options are available but search around on the GM performance on if you want to stay somewhat factory oriented. Good Luck

The government also just raised the fleet MPG for manufacturers. 500+ HP cars aren't going to help a company's MPG rating. Just get an SS and mod hell out of it.

There are over 2000 government regulations involved in designing and testing a vehicle. Putting a new powertrain in one changes the characteristics of the entire vehicle, and the entire thing will need to be retested. If you do it yourself its much easier. To prove it is "safe" enough for retail, there are so many hoops that require GM to jump through.
