LS3 Low oil message
2011 2SS. Stock. Got an oil low messages, add oil at 5400. Oil was not changed before. Dealer is telling me that this is normal to burn a quart every 1300-2000 miles, but I am not sure if that is accurate.
Is this more then normal, or about right? |

More oil burned than average, but well within the manufacture specs

I am sure they will say it is "normal" but I have never owned any car that used oil, at all! I love my Camaro but kind of have to shake my head when I read all these oil consumption threads. The 6'ers have it the worst! So much so that some have blown engines due to the amount of consumption. Mine does not use oil in any amount that is discernible on the dipstick over the course of the OLM down to 25% (I choose to change at that %). I just don't see how GM or any other mfg'er can state this when there are others of the same model that don't use ANY! They are basically saying the rest of us got lucky in our builds! ?? Now I know there are always a few "problem" children out there but when they state it's normal, I call

I got the same message about 2 months ago. I took it back to the dealer... they had to add 4.5 qrts to get it back to normal. I had 4000 miles on my oil... no signs of using, leaks etc. The dealer also told me that GM said 1 to 1.5 qrts every 3k miles is normal consumption... i think that is absolutely ridiculous... the old cars in 60's didn't consume oil like that.
Anyway... GM is doing an oil analysis where i have to take my car back every 1k miles so they can check it and add if needed.... this is required for purposes of tearing into the motor if no leaks are found and the consumption is continuing. Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk

Perhaps the missing oil is being burned in the combustion chamber and getting there via a bad PCV baffle attached to the underneath of the valley cover.

you should check your oil level every time you fill up your tank. Though I usually check every other fill up.

Car also has 5400 miles, it makes since (at least to me) that brand new car may use more oil, while things wore in. I will be checking oil few days a week, until next oil change, to see what is/if there is a problem. |

That's a great plan skatalic. Hopefully you don't have a serious problem and what Steiger says about the system is true. The Oil Life Monitor System only monitors the actual life or usability of the oil rather than the amount. Checking the dipstick regularly is a great way to prevent issues like this and keep in check things like oil consumption.

Get an oil catch can. A lot of oil goes into the intake and then into the cylinder head to be burnt with the gas. I removed my manifold intake and it was soaked with oil.
